"I bought the car with 50,000 miles and have had 65,000 trouble free miles over the last 5 years. I get 32 mpg hwy with the 1.8L with 5 speed. Much better performance with the 5 speed. Change the oil every 5-6K with full synthetic and you won't have engine problems. Still drives solid and no rattles with 115,000 miles. Now looking for a slightly newer Passat with lower miles."
"I bought my 2000 GLX new. It was difficult at the time to get a standard transmission, but I wanted a fun car to drive. It was and has been. At times I think the Audi would have been sportier and handled better but not for $10K more. I also got it because I fit in it (I'm 6'4"). Repairs can be expensive. It's well worth finding a mechanic that understands VWs. Our closest dealer is 90 minutes away. The interior has had some early wear and I've had to fix two power windows. All in all not bad. I'm getting ready to sell because I'm in need of a truck."
"This was my first German and reached speeds above 134 with no problems and some modifications. The car handled good to start, but was much better and just as comfortable with the 17's added. Fuel economy was closer to 31.5 highway (chipped), and 29 (+) natural. Problem with leak in front window after 6yrs."
