The Toyota Tacoma continues to be the best-selling midsize truck in the U.S. by a wide margin, thanks to a decades-long reputation as a capable and reliable truck that's as tough as nails. However, strong competitors like the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon have begun to eat into that dominance. Still, the Tacoma's versatility, wide range of styles and prices, and attractive styling are a compelling argument for truck buyers who want something capable, not in a package that has its own Zip code. The 2017 Toyota Tacoma builds on its reputation for off-road ability with the reintroduction of the TRD Pro model, which adds serious off-road gear to the basic package, making it a realistic off-road alternative to the Jeep Wrangler.
The 2017 Toyota Tacoma sees the return of the TRD Pro model, an off-road-ready version with extra gear to make the Tacoma even more capable when the going gets extremely tough. Other changes include a standard appearance package on SR5 V6 models.
Toyota's midsize truck is essentially all new, with new styling, a new V6 engine and transmission, a more refined and quieter interior, more capability, and new features, including Crawl Control to make off-roading even easier.
The 2015 Toyota Tacoma gains a new TRD Pro Series trim featuring 16-inch TRD wheels, TRD springs with increased travel, Bilstein shocks and a cat-back exhaust. The 4-cylinder Access Cab offers a Utility Package that removes the rear seat for expanded cargo space, while the Regular cab is dropped this year.
The 2014 Toyota Tacoma is offered with four levels of Entune audio, which leverages a smartphone to provide fully integrated access to navigation, entertainment and information services. A new SR appearance package is available for the Tacoma PreRunner and 4x4 Access Cab and Double Cab base models. The X-Runner is discontinued.
The Toyota Tacoma rolls into 2013 without significant changes after it got a mild facelift, minor interior upgrades and some new audio systems just last year. As before, some top-line options, including the JBL-equipped audio system and Toyota's Entune infotainment system, are reserved for the V6/automatic Double Cab versions.
The 2012 Toyota Tacoma compact pickup truck receives new front-end styling, with a new grille and headlight design, some upgraded interior pieces and new audio systems that include USB ports and Bluetooth. Double Cab V6 models receive the most modern audio system that includes Toyota's Entune infotainment, navigation, HD radio, text/email-to-voice and the JBL GreenEdge energy-efficient sound system.
Five new fuel-efficient models join the Tacoma lineup for 2011, all equipped with the 2.7-liter engine. New trims include the T|X and T|X Pro Package, both based on last year's SEMA concept trucks. New features for 2011 include standard air conditioning on Regular Cab models and satellite radio on all models equipped with the six-disc CD changer.
All Tacoma trucks are now fitted with Toyota's STAR Safety System that adds anti-lock brakes (ABS) and electronic traction and stability control. Also standard are front-seat side-impact airbags and full-length side curtain airbags. A new Automatic Limited-slip Differential (Auto-LSD) replaces last year's mechanical model and is standard on all trims except for TRD Off-Road Package-equipped vehicles. Access Cab models receive standard power windows and door locks as well as redesigned rear seat.
Toyota Racing Development (TRD) offers a TRD supercharger for Tacomas equipped with the 4.0-liter V6 engine, which can be purchased and installed through the dealership. Also new for 2008 is the TRD Off-Road Rugged Trail Package that includes a locking rear differential, Bilstein shocks, 16-inch Baja wheels, black overfenders and additional skid plates.
The Tacoma receives larger front seats and a two-tone instrument panel featuring new audio head units. Drivers can now switch off the Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) on models so equipped.
