The 2011 Nissan Altima Coupe offers all that’s good about the Altima Sedan, just in a more personalized package. Although the two cars share only one common body part, the hood, the Altima family resemblance is alive and well in Coupe form. However, despite its sporty intentions, when placed next to cars such as the Honda Accord Coupe and Hyundai Genesis, the Altima Coupe looks a bit bland. Toss a similarly priced V6 Chevrolet Camaro or Ford Mustang into the mix, and the Altima practically fades into the background. Still, the Altima Coupe has many strong points, such as a lower cost four-cylinder entry model and a host of cool interior features on the V6 trims.

You'll Like This Car If...

If you’re looking for a sporty coupe that doesn’t scream “Hey, look at me!” every time you venture out, the subtle yet sophisticated 2011 Nissan Altima Coupe is probably a good fit. A reasonable base price doesn’t hurt, either.

If you love the look of a coupe, but your daily routine includes ferrying four passengers, a low-slung sedan, such as the Volkswagen CC or Hyundai Sonata, might make a better choice.

... sport seats and high-end creature comforts, the Altima Coupe is comfortable enough to drive in everyday traffic. Steering response is precise, with quick turn-in aided by Nissan’s speed-sensitive power steering that adjusts to accommodate both low and high speed driving situations. Overall, the 3.5SE with V6 handles perceptibly better than the four-cylinder 2.5S, thanks to a sportier suspension and larger tires. While the 2.5S model’s manual transmission is the less-expensive choice, the Xtronic Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) provides a more controlled and smoother drivability, plus slightly better fuel economy.

Optional RearView Monitor
Since the rear of the Altima Coupe has two blind spots that make driving in reverse and changing lanes slightly awkward, this feature makes backing out of a parking space a little easier.

XM NavTraffic
This option allows drivers to see real-time information regarding traffic conditions on the navigation screen. On a long trip, the system can even reveal conditions ahead, so a driver can make decisions early about possible alternate routes.

Interior

Unique to the 2011 Nissan Altima Coupe are its body-hugging sport seats, which offer more side bolstering than the Sedan’s seats, making aggressive driving more inviting. Warm amber backlighting illuminates the Altima Coupe’s dash and switchgear, contrasting nicely with the handsome bright white instrument cluster gauges. Pouches on the lower fronts of the seats also add some additional storage space, and the available red leather interior offers a daring look rarely found in today’s cars. Headroom and legroom, as with any coupe, are not particularly abundant in the rear seat, but the front bucket seats should comfortably accommodate even those with longer legs. The Altima Coupe’s trunk is wide but not very deep; it can, however, be enlarged by folding down the 60/40 split-folding rear seats.

Exterior

Although the 2011 Nissan Altima Coupe and Altima (Sedan) share a common platform (and hood), the Coupe rides on a shorter wheelbase and features less pronounced front and rear overhangs. In addition, the Altima Coupe rides on larger tires and wheels, and has a slightly lower roofline. The combination of these styling elements, plus the Coupe’s angled rear window, elongated side glass, small rear window, and large integrated taillights, give it an aggressiveness not found with the Altima Sedan. To distinguish the V6 trim from base cars, Nissan adds side-mirror turn signal repeaters and larger wheels.

Standard Equipment

The 2011 Nissan Altima Coupe 2.5 S has keyless entry, push-button ignition, air conditioning, cruise-control buttons mounted on the steering wheel and an AM/FM six-disc stereo with auxiliary audio input. The 3.5 SR adds a sport-tuned suspension, 18-inch aluminum-alloy wheels, fog lights, a power sliding moonroof with sunshade, an eight-way power adjustable driver’s seat and heated side-view mirrors with integrated turn signals, while the SR with the manual transmission gets the Premium and Leather packages with Bose audio, leather seating, Bluetooth, heated front seats and more. Both models also have six airbags, VDC (Vehicle Dynamic Control) traction and stability control, anti-lock brakes (ABS), seat-belt sensors, front-seat active head restraints, a tire-pressure-monitoring system and a 60/40 fold-flat rear seat to aid in carrying longer items in the trunk.

Optional Equipment

Options include XM Satellite Radio, a Bose AM/FM six-CD player with nine speakers and speed-sensitive volume, a HomeLink Universal Transceiver and Bluetooth. Other options of note are the 6.5-inch touch-screen Nissan Navigation System with real-time traffic and weather information, steering wheel-mounted navigation controls and a rearview monitor that helps drivers deal with blind spots to the rear. Leather seating and an Xtronic Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) are also available.

Under the Hood

The 2011 Altima Coupe shares its two engines and one transmission with the Sedan (the manual is unique to the Coupe), offering a 2.5-liter four-cylinder or a 3.6-liter V6 paired with either a six-speed manual or the automatic Xtronic Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT). Predictably, the four-cylinder delivers better EPA fuel-economy ratings. The available Xtronic Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) offers very smooth operation and gives the driver the option of manual control. The V6 with the automatic has a “sport” function that offers faster manual control by electronically taking into consideration the driver’s perceived intentions.
