Best Electric Vehicle:
2013 Chevrolet Volt

Previous | Next

Unlike full-electric, battery-only vehicles, the term "range anxiety" is absent from the Chevrolet Volt's vocabulary. The Volt avoids this critical shortcoming by way of its unique Voltec propulsion system, which employs an internal combustion engine/generator and two electric motors. The result is a pure electric range of up to 38 miles with an additional 344 miles on tap once the battery is discharged. Chevrolet has made great strides in the past few years to boost the quality of its vehicles, and with fuel prices looming large on the minds of consumers, the increasingly relevant Chevrolet Volt holds an edge over the competition when it comes to resale value.

The functional yet fashionable exterior design features a distinctive shape and aerodynamic properties that rival those of the ultra-slippery Toyota Prius. Inside, a series of touch-capacitive controls along with two prominent 7-inch LCD displays help convey the Volt's futuristic vibe.

With more torque under the hood than a Porsche Boxster S, the Chevrolet Volt is an electric vehicle you actually want to drive. The ride is exceptionally quiet, due largely in part to the absence of engine noise.

The Chevy Volt's Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) starts around $40,000 and qualifies for a $7,500 federal tax credit. Although newcomers like the Toyota Prius Plug-in and Ford Focus Electric have joined the fray, the Chevy Volt, for the second year in a row, secures another award for best resale value.
