About Jeep Compass

The new 2017 Jeep Compass is not the old 2017 Jeep Compass, and buyers looking for an affordable compact SUV should all be grateful. Based on the same underpinnings as the new Jeep Renegade and Jeep Cherokee, the all-new 2017 Compass does much more than clear the low bar of being better than its predecessor. It's a strong alternative to vehicles like the Kia Sportage, Hyundai Tucson, Subaru Crosstrek and others. With only 180 horsepower the Compass won't win many drag races, but it is available with a rare combination of a manual transmission and 4-wheel drive, and not just on the base model. The Compass Trailhawk incorporates special features that make it surprisingly capable over terrain most people wouldn't even consider in a compact SUV.

2017 Jeep Compass

Despite sharing a model year with the SUV it's replacing, the 2017 Jeep Compass is an all-new vehicle, built on the same basic underpinnings as the Jeep Renegade and Jeep Cherokee. With a new engine, significantly better interior, and much better features, it immediately goes from afterthought to top of mind.

Little has changed as the 2015 Jeep Compass carries over for another year. A dome light replaces the removable flashlight, a new green paint color is available, and navigation joins the options list for mid-trim Latitude models.

The Compass receives an all-new 6-speed automatic transmission, but only on the front-drive and 4x4 Freedom Drive I models. More tweaks to the interior and exterior help somewhat, as do new safety features like standard front seat side airbags and an available rear backup camera.

All models receive standard air conditioning, chrome lock knobs and a tire pressure monitoring system. The CVT2 automatic transmission is fitted with AutoStick manual-shift mode and the Limited trim now offers navigation.

The least traditional of Jeeps launched at the most fortuitous of times. Usually, the arrival of a car-like, street-oriented, front-wheel-drive vehicle like Compass from Jeep would have off-road purists scratching their heads, especially since it's accompanied by a more traditional, truck-like model (Patriot) that will sell for about the same price.

"Being at the lower end of the crossover SUV market, the Compass takes a bit of flak from the gearhead youtube sensations who decide on what constitutes a good car these days. However, those guys are letting their testosterone get the better of them and they're totally wrong about the Compass. It's smooth, it's comfortable and it's efficient with gas. Not to mention being very reasonably priced compared to its peers. If you're looking for huge amounts of torque then you may be better off looking elsewhere but if you need a solid family car that has some basic off road ability and good amounts of space and features then the Compass is a great choice especially given the low price tag for a second hand model. Buy with confidence."

Pros: "Gas mileage, optional packages, price"

Cons: "Front windshield field of vision is limited, tires"

Likely to recommend this car? (1-10): 8

"I have now owned this car for 3 years and could not be more happy with it. The Compass gets great mileage and looks rugged, however has all the creature comforts I was looking for on the interior (heated seats, Uconnect Bluetooth, GPS, backup camera, Sunroof etc). I have driven this Jeep in all conditions, including off-road in the Cascades, and have found the handling and the acceleration to meet my needs. I have the 4x4 limited package with the higher end engine package and love it. Only problem I have had is the stock tires didn't last anywhere near 30000 as advertised, which left a bad taste in my mouth (i.e. what else did the manufacturer skimp out on?)."
