If you prefer your full-size pickups upright and rugged, as opposed to slickly styled and fad-laden, the 2017 GMC Sierra 1500 pickup should be pleasing to your eye. While it shares most of its mechanical underpinnings with the Chevy Silverado 1500, the Sierra brings a bit more upscale styling and features to the mix, not to mention the unrivaled Denali trim with its standard 6.2-liter V8. You can find similar features and style in a decked-out Ram 1500 or Ford F-150, but at the base level, the Sierra is pretty much on par with all of its rivals. Regardless, the GMC Sierra 1500 for 2017 has the muscle to excel in the categories that matter most to pickup buyers, namely payload, towing and horsepower.
For 2017, the GMC Sierra 1500 pickup gains standard Teen Driver, active aero-shutters and capless fuel fill. New options include tri-mode power steps, while low-speed forward automatic braking is added to the Sierra’s Enhanced Driver Alert package.
The 2016 GMC Sierra 1500 receives some major front-end styling revisions, as well as the addition of an 8-speed automatic on SLT and Denali models with the 5.3-liter engine. Other new options include lane-keep assist, power-articulating-assist steps and two new audio systems featuring Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
The 2015 GMC Sierra gains a new 8-speed automatic transmission on models equipped with the 6.2-liter V8. The Denali gains GM’s Magnetic Ride Control suspension, while Siri Eyes-Free and OnStar 4G LTE with built-in Wi-Fi hot spot is made available. A spray-in bedliner is also available on all models.
Changes to the 2013 GMC Sierra half-ton are limited to two new exterior colors and the addition of powertrain grade-braking that uses transmission downshifting to ease stress and temperature build-up on the brake rotors.
The 2012 GMC Sierra sports a new four-bar grille and offers heated and cooling seats on the SLT trim. StabilitTrak stability control gains Trailer Sway Control and hill start assist, while cruise control is made standard on the Work Truck. The 2012 GMC Sierra Denali truck gains heated and cooling front seats, a heated steering wheel and a rear backup camera.
Few changes have been made to the 2011 GMC Sierra Hybrid. Gray Green Metallic has been added to the color palette, an updated OnStar system is included and efforts have been made to reduce the amount of wind noise that makes its way into the truck’s cabin.
The 4.8-liter, 5.3-liter and 6.2-liter V8 engines are now E85 Flex-Fuel compatible; the 4.8- and 5.3-liter engines also gain variable valve timing. New standard features on all 1500 models include side-curtain and front seat-mounted side-impact airbags as well as StabiliTrak stability control. New available features include a USB port on all but the base radio, a six-speed automatic transmission on Regular and Extended Cab models with the 5.3-liter engine and greater availability of the rear backup camera option.
Preferring to deploy its "Two-Mode"
hybrid technology in large, heavy vehicles first to optimize per-vehicle fuel savings, GM rolled it out last year in Chevy Tahoe,
GMC Yukon and
Cadillac Escalade full-size SUVs and adds Silverado and GMC Sierra
pickups for 2009. This technology doesn't come cheap, but it makes these easily the market's most fuel-efficient full-sizers.
