Nearly thirty years after exiting the American car market, Fiat acquired a significant stake in Chrysler, and in the process secured a path for re-entry into the USA.
The first model Fiat offered was the Fiat 500, a two-door, front-wheel-drive compact called the Cinquecento in its native Italy. After tremendous success in other parts of the world, Fiat set out to elicit the same response in the USA with its little 500, a car that delivers fun - if not sporty - driving dynamics and plenty of standard features with an attractive, economy-car price. Shoppers can now also choose the Fiat 500 Convertible (called Spider in Fiat lingo) or the performance-oriented Fiat 500 Abarth. Plus, Fiat has expanded into the subcompact crossover space, with the Fiat 500L and Fiat 500X. Throw in an electric version, the Fiat 500e, and you've got a whole lot of 500s with a whole lot of style.
