The big news for 2014 Cruze models is the availability of a turbodiesel engine. This is the powerplant of choice in about 40 percent of European Cruze models because of its fuel economy (40-plus mpg) and power output. Plus, we named it to our list of the 10 Best Sedans Under $25,000 for 2014.

The 2012 Chevrolet Cruze sees a two-mpg increase in the highway fuel economy on models equipped with the 1.4-liter turbocharged engine. A 6-speed manual is now standard on LT trims, while the Connectivity Plus Cruise package is made standard on 1LT and Eco trims. LTZ trims gain keyless entry and start as well as fog lamps.

About Chevrolet Cruze

Where foreign automakers once dominated the compact-car segment, we now see the domestic industry making a resilient comeback. Leading the pack is the 2015 Chevrolet Cruze compact sedan, a thoroughly complete small car offering an impressive array of features and trims. In a matchup with such heavyweights as the Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla, the Cruze offers more engine choices, including a fuel-efficient diesel. The Cruze feels more substantial than most economy cars, with a solid feel, an extremely quiet cabin and ride and handling comparable to many midsize sedans. By adding the latest high-tech features, Chevy hopes to lure away younger buyers currently shopping for cars like the Ford Focus and Hyundai Elantra.

Pros: "great price, plenty of trunk space & fun to drive"

Cons: "can't keep up with my Vette!"

Likely to recommend this car? (1-10): 10

"Fun to drive, outstanding fuel economy (35.8 mpg avg over 70k miles) and all the creature comforts needed for work commute or long trips. The price was right and was a no brainer based on 20k miles per year driving. No problems and still running strong!"

Pros: "MPGs, Comfort"

Cons: "Would like leather but not available in eco."

Likely to recommend this car? (1-10): 10

"Bought this car for the gas mileage. Never dreamed I actually love driving it. I have the eco which by reading the reviews I think is worth the money. I also have the manual transmission. I find that with the turbo it is very peppy. I average 39 MPGs. I have had no issue with the car at all."

Pros: "Mileage...handling......looks"

Cons: "Price...ergonomics"

Likely to recommend this car? (1-10): 10

"First car I ever owned that has been maintenance free except for oil changes in 54400 miles! Great gas mileage! Things I don't like....ergonomics...drink holders should be forward like the Cobalts!! head space for entry... hard to get in and out of!! I am a pick up guy! Hard to see out of rear quarters... seats and post obstruct vision! Grat gas milage at highway speed...... Very good car!!!"
