10 Best Used SUVs Under $10,000

It's no wonder SUVs are so popular today -- they offer versatility, plenty of room for gear, and all-season confidence. But the prices of new crossovers and SUVs can cause sticker shock. However, if you do your homework, you'll be able to find a reliable used SUV for under $10,000. Compiled by the Kelley Blue Book staff, this list is a great starting point for your research.

Although the Hyundai Santa Fe has all-wheel drive, it isn't a serious off-roader. The Santa Fe's strengths are with on-road duties, such as road trips and visits to the local warehouse big box store. As we haved come to expect from Hyundai, the Santa Fe is a smart value, thanks to its long list of standard equipment.

In 2009. crossovers were starting to overtake the market and vehicles such as Chevrolet's midsize TrailBlazer began to feel dated. However, this truck-based SUV was built to be more robust than the crossovers of the time, which is why the TrailBlazer offers some longevity. Most TrailBlazers are powered by a fuel-friendly inline six-cylinder engine, and all models accommodate five people.

Many of the vehicles on this list are front-wheel-drive crossover SUVs, which will serve many people's needs but their towing capacity and off-road capability are limited. For that capability, you can look to the Dodge Durango, a more traditional seven-passenger body-on-frame SUV with rugged looks, attractive interior and an available V8.

The 2007 Nissan Murano has styling that stands out from the rest of the SUV crowd, as well as car-like handling. Its distinctive design is also a big part of the interior's appeal, as are generous room in both rows and plenty of storage space. Also appealing is the Murano's strong V6 powerplant.

For 2008, the Ford Explorer was an extremely popular SUV, thanks to its three-row seating, impressive towing capacity and available V8 power. Smaller than a full-size SUV and more capable than a crossover, the Ford Explorer has served as a capable family truckster for decades.

The Pilot, Honda's largest SUV, has earned a reputation for reliability, comfort and convenience. It offers seating for eight, and treats its occupants to a smooth ride, plus a roomy, feature-filled cabin. Front-side and three-row head curtain airbags are standard on every model.

With the roomy interior and cargo area of a compact SUV plus the advantage of standard all-wheel drive, the Subaru Forester is a fuel-efficient crossover that provides long-term reliability.

Honda's CR-V is consistently one of the bestselling compact SUVs in America. This SUV provides a sunny, fun-to-drive attitude and impressive reliability. Offering plenty of room plus thoughtful touches throughout the versatile cabin, the CR-V is a reliable companion that will make families happy for years to come.

The Toyota Highlander has always been one of our favorite midsize SUVs. It combines robust reliability, an interior full of creature comforts, available all-wheel drive, three powertrain options, and an available third row.

Toyotas are known for rock-solid reliability, and the RAV4 serves as an excellent example of Toyota build quality. While the RAV4 is a compact SUV, it is one of the largest in the segment, and comes standard with five-passenger seating, a fuel-efficient 4-cylinder engine, and a bevy of safety equipment. Options include a third row and V6 power.
