How much does the 2019 Volvo S60 cost?

Pricing for the new 2019 Volvo S60 starts at $35,800 and will top $60,000 for a fully loaded T8 plug-in hybrid model. Most S60 buyers choose something in the low-$40,000 range. The Volvo S60 tends to offer more for less compared with some of its more popular European rivals, and it’s also offered via the automaker’s subscription service, Care by Volvo.

Driving it

Most of our time in Volvo’s newest sedan has been spent behind the wheel of the S60 R-Design outfitted with the T6 powertrain, sporting 316 horsepower and all-wheel drive. The turbocharged and supercharged 4-cylinder engine provides good power and minimal turbo lag, and there’s no supercharger whine. Thanks to a new front suspension and the fact that some of the power is going to the S60’s rear wheels, there’s no torque steer felt through the steering wheel.

The 8-speed automatic transmission does its job well, shifting smoothly and unobtrusively when you expect it to. Moreover, the electric-assist power steering has a natural feel, and the ride quality of the S60 is outstanding -- supple but possessing well controlled body motions that make this midsize Volvo sedan feel totally composed on twisty pavement. In those situations, the sharpened throttle and transmission response of the Dynamic driving mode is most appreciated.

Volvo S60 feature highlights

The Volvo S60 offers plenty of safety features and technology, naturally, but there’s also plenty to make driving easier and/or more fun.

Pilot Assist  Similar to other adaptive cruise control and lane keeping systems, Pilot Assist adjusts your speed to the vehicle ahead and gives gentle steering assistance by reading lane lines.

Big touchscreen  Front and center in every new S60 is a big, vertically oriented infotainment touchscreen.

Sport Chassis  Available only the S60 R-Design, for a mere $200 you can outfit your S60 with retuned shock absorbers and lower it by 20 mm.

City Safety  Can detect vehicles, pedestrians and large animals day or night, and alert the driver via escalating warnings. If a collision is imminent the system can apply the brakes to avoid or reduce impact.

Park Assist Pilot  Does parallel parking make you nervous? Park Pilot Assist practically does it for you.

Volvo S60 exterior

With its low hood and short rear deck, the 2019 Volvo S60 looks like a modern sedan shaped in the wind tunnel, but it’s a handsome design that’s still very much a Volvo. Notable details include attractive sculpting on the hood and sides of the car, along with T-shaped LED “Thor’s Hammer” front driving lights. In back, dual chromed exhausts are on duty beneath LED taillights that emphasize the width of the new S60. If there’s any doubt this car is a Volvo, a big badge in the middle of the diagonally bisected grille leaves no doubt. Also, in a neat trick, Volvo stylists have made it look as if the grille floats inside the S60’s front opening.

Volvo S60 interior

Inside, the look is Scandinavian simple, with a handsomely uncluttered design. Helping make this possible is the large, vertically oriented 9-inch Sensus touchscreen. Swipe the screen of this multifunction controller one way and you’ll see 19 vehicle functions, everything from ESC Sport mode and Active Bending Lights to cruise control and Road Sign Information. Swipe it the other way and you’ll see 22 Applications that range from stereo settings and Bluetooth to Spotify and Pandora. While Sensus is a great way to de-clutter the dash (and the interface gets better with familiarity), it still causes the driver to look away from the road far too often. On a positive note, the Sensus chipset has been upgraded for 2019, which makes for faster boot times, quicker access to the back-up camera, and improved navigation recalculations.

Volvo S60 Interior,

On the road the passenger cabin is solid, quiet and roomy, with plenty of headroom inside in spite of the huge panoramic sunroof. Back-seat room is good, too, with a 6-foot-tall passenger being able to sit behind a driver of the same height.

Volvo S60 engines

The Volvo S60 engine lineup includes a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, a turbocharged and supercharged 4-cylinder engine, and a plug-in hybrid powertrain that delivers better fuel economy and more power than both the others. The plug-in hybrid S60 T8 pairs the supercharged and turbocharged 4-cylinder engine and a 10.4-kilowatt electric motor between the rear wheels, delivering total output of 400 horsepower. A lithium-ion battery sits in the center spine of the chassis and delivers an all-electric range of approximately 21 miles. Using a 220-volt power source and the onboard charging cord, the new S60 PHEV can be fully charged in 2.5 hours.

Volvo S60 warranty

The Volvo S60 is covered by the automaker’s 4-year/50,000-mile warranty, which is typical coverage for the segment.

Volvo S60 safety

Advanced safety features abound in the Volvo S60. It starts with the new SPA chassis, which features a strong passenger cell protected by crumple zones and other targeted areas of maximal energy dissipation. Standard safety features include stability control, a lane-keeping aid, forward-collision warning, a drowsy-driver alert and seatbelt pretensioners. The S60 also includes a full complement of airbags and special seats that absorb vertical crash energy that can compress spinal vertebrae in off-road accidents.
