Volvo used a pair of radical one-offs to showcase two upcoming production models that are set to appear in showrooms sometime next year. The Volvo 40.1 offers a looks at the 2018 XC40 compact crossover while the 40.2 foreshadows what is expected to be the next-gen V40 wagon. As Volvo previously indicated, the pair will be the first vehicles spun from the automaker’s new Compact Modular Architecture (CMA), which was co-developed with its Chinese parent company, Geely. Specifically created for small vehicles, Volvo says it has “liberated the company’s designers and engineers to explore bold and daring new directions.”

“Each member of our product family has its own distinct character, just like the members of a real family. CMA has helped us to capture something special, something youthful in our new concept cars. They have an energy, a disruptive and engaging urban character that makes them stand out amongst the crowd," said Thomas Ingenlath, Senior Vice President, Design, at Volvo Car Group. “This is the flavor of small Volvos to come.”

Innovative on every level

Beyond their dramatic visual presence that establishes a new chapter in Volvo’s styling nuance, these upcoming CMA-based production models also promise “groundbreaking Scandinavian interior designs,” the world’s most advanced standard package of safety features and several advanced drivetrain technologies. These include a new compact-based T5 Twin Engine plug-in hybrid powertrain as well as a pure electric 40 Series model to be launched later – both of which Håkan Samuelsson, president and chief executive calls “central to the CMA architecture.”

Volvo’s T5 Twin Engine setup will be front-drive and based around its new 180-horsepower/1.5-liter turbocharged Drive-E 3-cylinder gasoline engine and a new 7-speed dual-clutch automatic coupled with a 67-horse electric motor fed by a 9.7kWh battery pack. Depending on market, expect to see both T-charged 4-cylinder gasoline and turbodiesel engines on offer with AWD as well as other transmission choices. The new 40 Series also will be capable of accepting autonomous-driving systems.
