Volkswagen ID. ROOMZZ Concept Debuts in Shanghai
- Three-row battery-electric SUV concept at the 2019 International Automobile & Manufacturing Technology Exhibition in Shanghai
- Seven-passenger SUV will have four-wheel drive, up to a 295-mile range, and 301 hp
- Advanced driver assistance and fully autonomous operation are part of the plan
Volkswagen’s ID. ROOMZZ concept SUV made its debut at the 18th International Automobile & Manufacturing Technology Exhibition (2019 Auto Shanghai) in China. The concept is billed as a zero-emissions SUV. It’s the sixth model in the ID. Family, joining ID., ID. CROZZ, ID. BUZZ, ID. VIZZION and ID. BUGGY. The ID. ROOMZZ is slated for production beginning 2021, according to VW.
ID. ROOMZZ is based on VW’s modular electric drive matrix (MEB) platform. It uses an 82-kWh battery to power two electric motors with a total of 301 system horsepower (100 hp front/201 hp rear), with 4Motion all-wheel drive. The SUV will be capable of 0-62 mph runs of 6.6 seconds, with a top speed of up to 112 mph. Range on a single charge will up to 280 miles (European WLTP cycle)/295 miles (China’s NEFZ cycle). The battery can be charged by either an induction interface, or via a conventional charging cable and plug.
SUV or Minivan?
The ID. ROOMZZ has a pair of sliding doors on each side, which would peg it as a minivan in the United States. The front doors slide forward along the front fenders, while the rear doors slide along the rear fender, with no B-pillar breaking up the resulting large side entries. The interior of the ID. ROOMZZ is open and airy, with three rows of seating. Under certain conditions, each of the seven seats can be rotated inward up to 25 degrees to create a lounge-like atmosphere inside the cabin. The concept is equipped with a floating dash and digital cockpit that appear to hover in front of the driver. The steering wheel also hovers, and has digitized areas and sensitive touch-screen areas.
VW ambitiously includes driver assistance IQ.DRIVE mode, and fully autonomous ID.PILOT drive mode in the ID. ROOMZZ’s description and instrumentation. There is also an IQ.STEERING SYSTEM, which disconnects and moves the steering wheel to make more space inside.
VW has not announced any plans for a North American launch of the ID. ROOMZZ.
