• VW’s 3-row crossover SUV concept targets mountain bikers
  • Exterior, interior enhancements and upgrades
  • Tire and suspension modifications for trail use
  • Concept has matching HIVE EX compact expedition trailer

The Volkswagen Atlas 3-row crossover SUV has been treated to a concept version that will be displayed at the New York International Auto Show. The Atlas Basecamp Concept is designed to showcase ways that the SUV can be enhanced to serve endurance mountain bikers.

Rugged Capability Added

Starting with an Atlas SEL Premium (the top-of-the-line model which starts at $48,395), the Basecamp Concept wears a coating of Platinum Gray and Black Uni matte finish paint with orange accents. The standard 20-inch five-spoke alloy wheels are replaced by a set of 17-inch Traverse MX Concept wheels wearing 265/70R17 all-terrain tires.

Other modifications include a custom body kit by Air Design, an H&R lift kit with coil over springs that raise the ride height approximately 1.5 inches and a Front Runner Slimline II roof rack system with bike holders. To enhance nighttime off-road activities, the concept is fitted LED light bars on the front and rear. Inside, the Basecamp Concept features protective add-ons like all-weather mats from Volkswagen Accessories.

Atlas debuted as a 2018 model, joining the 2-row Tiguan in VW’s SUV lineup. For 2019, Atlas is available in a broad range of trim levels, starting with the 2.0-liter turbo S at $30,895. All other trim levels come with a naturally aspirated (non-turbo) 3.6-liter V6 engine which produces 276 hp and 266 lb-ft of torque. Front-wheel drive is standard, and VW’s 4Motion permanent all-wheel drive system is available on V6 models.

HIVE EX Trailer Follows the Basecamp

The Atlas Basecamp Concept will be displayed with an off-road capable HIVE EX compact expedition trailer. The trailer will wear the same wheel and tire design as the Concept. The lightweight, strong tow-behind camper boasts a queen-size bed and a pullout canopy. It has a self-contained water tank, propane tank, portable toilet, hot shower and removable leveling jacks, a kitchenette with a stove, sink and a refrigerator/freezer.

No plans have been announced for production of the Atlas Basecamp Concept.
