Fuji Heavy Industries has released details about its new Subaru Global Platform which will serve as the foundation for all of its next-generation vehicles starting with the all-new 2017 Subaru Impreza. This scalable architecture will accommodate all types of powertrains from conventional to full EV and make it easier and more efficient for Subaru factories in Japan and the U.S. to handle production of multiple models.

Specs on the Subaru Global Platform are impressive and will significantly elevate vehicle dynamics, NVH characteristics and active/passive safety. Torsional rigidity has been increased by 70 percent and bending strength upped by 70-100 percent. The revised suspension and steering will improve straight-line stability, quicken response, lower the center of gravity by 5mm and reduce body roll by 50 percent compared to current Subaru models, giving their successors significantly greater agility and providing what the automaker claims will be “danger avoidance capabilities on a level with a high-performance sports car.” A more high-strength steel coupled with enhanced manufacturing techniques have increased impact energy absorption levels of the central structure by over 40 percent, and the design will accommodate improvements to ensure it maintains class-leading passenger protection.

Calling it “the culmination of the know-how we have developed over many years,” FHI President Yasuyuki Yoshinaga noted the Subaru Global Platform lifts the automaker’s technology to new heights. This fundamental building block along with a new generation of advanced horizontally-opposed engines, Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive and upgraded forms of the automaker’s EyeSight assist system that facilitate greater autonomous driving capability will be the core elements of all future Subaru models.
