The Ram 2500 and 3500 represent the Heavy Duty models in Ram’s lineup of full-size pickup trucks. As with other heavy duty rivals like the Ford Super Duty and Chevrolet Silverado HD models, the Ram Heavy Duty series plays the big brother to a popular, light-duty pickup. In this case, both have similar design as the half-ton Ram 1500, but the Heavy Duty models take everything up a notch – or twelve.

Both models are all-new for 2019, following on the heels of the all-new 2019 Ram 1500. As with the 1500, each offers a tech-rich interior highlighted by a huge, 12-inch vertically oriented tablet-like infotainment screen, active safety and driver-assistance features, and helpful towing aids. Exterior design similarities are there, too, but as with all things Heavy Duty, the 2500 and 3500 are bigger and bolder in every way than their 1500 counterpart.

The 2019 Ram 2500 and 2019 Ram 3500 share similar interior styles and body configurations – with regular, crew cab, or Mega Cab configurations and bed lengths of 6 or 8 feet -- but each model has its own attributes and advantages.

Ram 2500 advantages

The Ram 2500 represents the three-quarter-ton pickup in the lineup. Like the 3500, it comes standard with a 6.4-liter Hemi V8 gasoline or optional 6.7-liter inline-6 turbo diesel made by Cummins. The 2500 provides an excellent blend of everyday drivability and hefty towing ability. In its most tow-specific configuration, the 2019 Ram 2500 can pull 19,780 pounds, while also providing a remarkably quiet and compliant ride.

The Ram 2500, especially a higher-trim version like the Limited version with tested with rear air suspension, is easier and far less daunting to drive than its size suggests. It drives smaller than it should, tows up to 19,780 pounds, hauls up to 4,050 pounds of payload, and provides high levels of technology and premium amenities.

Ram 3500 advantages

If your work or play involves towing massive – and we mean massive – loads, this is the Ram for you. One of the biggest headlines for the 2019 Ram 3500 is an upgraded version of the 6.7-liter diesel that touts 1,000 lb-ft of torque. That is best in class, and marks the official foray into a 4-figure torque number from a vehicle that anyone can simply walk into a dealership and buy. This also gives the Ram 3500 1-ton truck the ability to tow a staggering 35,100 pounds (albeit in regular cab, 4x2 form with dual rear wheels).

In the constant battle for supremacy and automotive one-upmanship, that max tow figure puts the Ram above the latest Ford Super Duty, even if it’s just by 100 pounds. Increased payload is another big reason for opting for the Ram 3500 over the 2500, regardless of engine. The 2019 Ram 3500 has a max payload capacity of 7,680 pounds in regular-cab form. Again, that figure just edges the Ford Super Duty’s rating.

Similarities

Both the Ram 2500 and 3500 are all-new for 2019. Each is offered in regular, crew or Mega cab, with either a 6-foot-4 or 8-foot box, depending on trim. Each is also offered in rear- or 4-wheel drive, though only the Ram 2500 is offered as the off-road Power Wagon. The Ram 3500, alternately, is the only one of the two to offer dual rear wheels (a “dually”).

Final recommendation

If your towing and payload needs are less than 20,000 pounds and 4,050 pounds, respectively, the new 2019 Ram 2500 is an exceptionally capable heavy duty truck that’s also surprisingly comfortable as a daily driver. The Ram 2500 is also the choice if you want the off-road ready Power Wagon. For bigger jobs, look to the Ram 3500. It boasts higher payload ratings, and its optional 1,000 pound-foot diesel engine enables class-leading towing capability. The 3500 is also the one to get if you require a dual rear-wheel setup.
