According to a report by Reuters, Porsche CEO Oliver Blume is considering the potential future of diesel engines in the company’s global vehicle line. The admission came in the wake of repercussions from Volkswagen Group’s continuing diesel emissions scandal that has already seen Porsche suspend sales of its turbodiesel models in America.

Stating Porsche will continue offering a number of different powertrain choices, including internal combustion engines, hybrids and pure electric vehicles starting with the new Mission E sedan in 2019, Blume noted that diesels may not figure in the company’s long-term plan and that a final decision on the matter will be made by the end of the decade. For now, the oil-burning alternative does remains viable. And like the recently introduced Panamera luxury sedan, the redesigned Cayenne SUV set to launch this fall will still offer a turbodiesel variant in some markets.

During the course of the interview, Blume also said Porsche is working with Audi to create a new shared platform specifically for electric vehicles. By adopting common components and technologies where possible, the effort should generate “significant” savings for both of these VAG manufacturers as the new Mission E (for which Porsche has already committed to invest over $1 billion refurbishing its Stuttgart headquarters assembly plant), Blume indicated the marque may introduce more types of pure electric models, including an EV version of its best-selling Macan SUV, as well as speed up the introduction of their future EV models
