While the compact SUV segment is crowded, the 2019 MItsubishi Outlander PHEV stands out for its roomy 5-passenger seating, plug-in capability and solid handling thanks to its standard all-wheel drive layout. The Outlander benefits from a number of improvements that come with its 2019 refresh, and each of its two trims, SEL and GT, include a long list of standard features.

In addition to visible changes inside and outside, Mitsubishi has also made under-the-skin tweaks to the independent suspension that improve handling and ride comfort, as well as taking additional steps to reduce interior noise levels.

Revamped interior/exterior

Among the upgrades for the 2019 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, the most notable include new front seats, redesigned for added comfort and support. Drivers will appreciate the illuminated window switches and automatic up/down controls for all windows. Rear passengers benefit from new air conditioning vents and the cabin now has two USB ports. The redesigned interior has a contemporary handsome look and there’s upwards of 60 cubic feet of cargo space behind the first row when the back seat is folded down.

The freshening to the Outlander’s exterior includes an updated grille and headlamps, plus a new 18-inch alloy wheel design. The effect of the exterior enhancements gives the Outlander a cleaner, more chiseled look. All models also benefit from an electric de-icer that keeps ice and snow from building up under the windshield wiper. PHEVs are distinguished visually by their unique badging and the additional door flap for the plug-in socket.

Driving the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV

Thanks to the front- and rear-mounted electric motors, the 2019 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV makes good use of the total system output of 190 horsepower. The hybrid steps out smartly, has good midrange passing power and seamless operation from the single-speed motors on each axle that employ a drive mode switchable reduction gear box.

The interior has good room for five, the Outlander does a good job in bridging the gap between compact and midsize SUVs. Non-PHEV Outlanders have an optional third row for 7-passenger seating, however the plug-in version sticks to a 2-row format to accommodate the hybrid’s battery pack beneath the rear load floor.

The hybrid system adds weight to the Outlander, but the battery placement beneath the floor gives the vehicle a low center of gravity, which helps reduce body roll and gives this SUV a firmly planted feel. For some, however, the suspension may feel a bit taut and the ride not as smooth as other crossovers in its class. The new, firm supportive seats help rachet up the comfort level, however, and the Outlander has sharp handling thanks to its dialed-in electric power steering and linear brake application.

There are several interesting features to play with that also make the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV unique in its class. It has an all-wheel drive mode that locks front and rear torque distribution at 50/50, an EV save mode that allows you to conserve battery power for later use of pure electric motivation, and a charge mode that allows you to recharge the battery using the engine (though we don’t recommend this feature very much as it puts a hit on the gas engine’s fuel economy and range). There are also several levels of regenerative braking accessed either through the center shift lever or the paddles mounted on the steering wheel. The most aggressive regen mode nearly allows one-pedal driving, though you will need to use the brake to bring the vehicle to a full stop.

Infotainment

The Outlander PHEV is equipped with a 7.0-inch center smartphone link display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. The infotainment system also includes digital HD radio, standard 6-speaker audio system, Bluetooth connectivity, steering wheel audio, phone and voice controls and a 3-month subscription to SiriusXM satellite radio.

Feature highlights

The 2019 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is equipped with DC Fast Charging capability that allows the batteries to be recharged from zero to 80-percent in as little as 25 minutes.  The all-wheel drive system features torque vectoring to deliver power to the wheel with the most grip in slippery conditions.

Top-trim GT models come with a standard multi-view camera, a 1,500-watt AC power supply with two outlets, a premium Rockford Fosgate audio system with 710 watts and 9 speakers, and LED headlights and fog lamps.
