Long expected and even longer discussed, a Mazda CX-5 powered by a diesel engine has finally been launched. At the 2019 New York International Auto Show, Masahiro Moro, Mazda’s North American boss, announced the arrival of the 2019 CX-5 Signature AWD, which is powered by a SkyActiv-D 2.2-liter diesel engine. Presales of the new CX-5 diesel, he said, have begun immediately online.

Moro also announced that Jeffrey Guyton has been named the President of Mazda North American Operations. This is significant because Guyton comes to North America from Mazda Motor Europe, where he accumulated vast experience with diesels.

“As Mazda continues our climb toward premium, we will offer more powertrain choices that premium customers expect,” said Guyton. “I am happy to share that Mazda’s Skyactiv-D 2.2-liter diesel engine is joining the U.S. powertrain lineup with our debut model, the 2019 CX-5 Signature AWD with Skyactiv-D.”

Engine details

The diesel engine in the CX-5 is a 2.2-liter 4-cylinder that produces 168 horsepower at 4,000 rpm and a healthy 290 lb-ft of torque at a lowly 2,000 rpm. A sequential twin turbocharger helps provide linear throttle response, while also greatly increasing low-end and high-end torque.

While a maximum towing capacity for the CX-5 diesel has not been announced, we hope it’s better than the 2,000-pound rating of the standard CX-5, which is powered by a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder gas engine.

In EPA fuel economy, the 2019 Mazda CX-5 diesel gets an estimated 27 mpg city/30 mpg highway and 28 mpg overall. Chevrolet’s Equinox diesel, the Mazda CX-5 diesel’s main competitor, gets up to 39 mpg on the highway. Also notable: The standard CX-5, whose gasoline engine has fuel-saving cylinder deactivation, is 1 mpg better than the CX-5 diesel on the highway (31 mpg).

How much does the new Mazda CX-5 diesel cost?

The 2019 Mazda CX-5 Signature AWD diesel has a Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $41,000 (plus a destinaton charge of $1,045).  It's available in four colors: black, pearl white, red and metallic gray.
