Consensus: An affordable way to enjoy Mercedes-Benz luxury on a budget. If you don’t need much interior room, this little wagon-like SUV should prove satisfying.
The 2019 Lexus UX is basically an entry-level crossover that offers buyers a foot in the Lexus door without breaking the bank. Not intended for off-road duty or rugged rural trails, the UX is more an urban dweller. Its tiny size makes it easy to maneuver in tight city confines, and its hybrid engine option returns a combined 39-mpg, a best-in-class bragging right. Where the UX falls short is in performance, namely acceleration and cornering. Those looking for the sportiest ride possible should step up to the UX F-Sport models. We’d also recommend going with the UX 250h hybrid over the UX 200 as it nets you more horsepower and all-wheel drive, but even then there’s a catch. The UX 250h’s AWD only works at speed up to 43 mph, after which the rear electric motors shut off leaving the front wheels to do all the work.
The 2019 Mercedes-Benz GLA is the least expensive way to get Mercedes quality, features and clout. Like other subcompact luxury SUVs, the GLA is small on the inside, with little in the way of rear seat legroom or cargo space behind said seat. What the GLA does do well is zip in and out of tight confines such as heavy traffic, as well as ease into small parking spaces. The turbocharged engine is powerful enough to please, although the 7-speed automatic is a bit rough at times. Handling is also acceptable but nothing to write home about, and fuel economy is also only average for this class. Unlike the UX, however, the GLA’s standard gas engine can be paired with all-wheel drive. There is no hybrid option. The GLA is priced higher than most of its competitors and although it does come well equipped, the price can rocket north quickly once options are added.
Lexus UX Advantages
The Lexus UX delivers a more comfortable ride, better fuel economy and the option of a hybrid engine. It also comes with more standard driver assists such as adaptive cruise control and lane departure warning. The UX will hold its value better than the GLA, and it offers a bit more interior room as well as tighter turning circle.
Mercedes Benz GLA Advantages
The GLA offers a few more features than UX, including things like Android Auto, a panoramic sunroof, leather seating and a self-parking feature. The GLA’s interior and dash design is more traditional, which some may find more appealing.
Both cars can be equipped with advanced driver assists, are easily maneuverable in small spaces and offers sufficient levels of luxury as to make them standout. Both can be had with all-wheel drive, premium audio systems and offer the same standard warranty.
The UX isn’t as powerful as the GLA, but it does offer decent performance and superior fuel economy. The UX also offers a hybrid option, and feature for feature pretty much matches the GLA, although not when it comes to Android Auto. The GLA will also cost a fair bit more than the UX, especially with options. If the UX’s unusual dash design doesn’t offend you, we’d say its resale, additional interior room and styling make it the better choice.
