2020 Kia Telluride
Starting Price: $32,735 | Price Yours
Above Average: A luxurious 7-8 passenger people hauler that can handle the snow.
Below Average: Cargo space behind the third row is limited if you are hauling 7-8 people.
Consensus: A good-looking 3-row crossover that drives well and comes loaded with safety and convenience features.
2019 Kia Sorento
Starting Price: $27,335 | Price Yours
Above Average: If you want a smaller-than-normal 3-row SUV that costs less, the Kia Sorento is a good choice.
Below Average: Because of its smaller size, the Sorento will only hold 7 passengers, towing is capped at 5,000 pounds.
Consensus: While it’s a little smaller than other 3-row crossovers, it packs a ton of useful room and features for a lower price.
The 2020 Kia Telluride is Kia’s new largest SUV that was designed at Kia’s studio in Irvine, California, and made specifically for the U.S. market. On a nearly cross-country trip, we got to spend some time with Telluride and were impressed with its comfort, control and its power. We also were very impressed with the incredibly smooth start/stop system and the sound system in the well-equipped SX trim of the Telluride. Our favorite features were the blind-spot monitor which shows a camera view of the side of the vehicle in the digital display dash, and the huge 10.25-inch infotainment screen. The interior of the Telluride is luxurious without being ostentatious. The only niggling thing about the Telluride was space in the third row, which also, when up, compromises the otherwise excellent cargo space behind the second row.
The 2019 Kia Sorento, on the other hand, is smaller than the Telluride and the third-row seats are more for little kids. While the Sorento is tight for seven passengers, it functions just fine as a 2-row SUV for five. For 2019 the Sorento gets two engines, a base 2.4-liter 4-cylinder and a V6. The V6 will add a few thousand dollars to the cost of the Sorento, but it’s a welcome upgrade over the 185-hp base engine. Standard features include Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, cruise control, and stain-resistant cloth upholstery--a boon for families with small kids prone to messes. For our money, we'd step into the LX trim to add all-wheel drive, blind-spot monitoring and a pair of rapid-charge USB ports.
Functional 3-row SUVs that are fully-capable family haulers.
2020 Kia Telluride Advantages
The biggest SUV in Kia’s lineup offers the most space for hauling 8 passengers comfortably.
2019 Kia Sorento Advantages
The Kia Sorento is an affordable way to get a 3-row SUV that can carry 7 people in a pinch.
The Kia Telluride is a welcome addition to the Kia lineup because of its size, amenities and sharp exterior styling. It’s a true 3-row SUV that can carry up to eight passengers and has the added bonus of good power from its V6 engine, great handling and a comfortable ride. While it’s a capable flagship, it doesn’t eliminate the need for a slightly smaller SUV in the form of the Sorento. Featuring a smaller footprint with room for seven (provided that the extra two are more tyke than teen), the Sorento offers value in a solid package that works really well as a 2-row 5-passenger entry that can be used for 3-row duty in a pinch. Both models also benefit from Kia’s excellent 5-year/60,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty as well the 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain coverage.
