2019 Kia Sportage

Starting Price: $24,745 | Price Yours

Above Average: Optional strong turbocharged engine; outstanding warranty; knobs and buttons for climate control and other things (not all touchscreen); some nice luxury touches even in the entry-level model

Below Average: Not great off road; a bit tight inside for passengers and cargo compared to others; fuel economy could be better

Consensus: The Kia Sportage is a solid little compact SUV that offers a lot in a small package. It comes with plenty of options right out the gate, included heated and ventilated front seats. a 320-watt Harman Kardon stereo, and an excellent warranty. It’s comfortable, fun, and looks sporty, and has an excellent and strong optional 2.0-liter turbocharged engine. There are better choices off road, however.

2019 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport

Starting Price: $21,925 | Price Yours

Above Average: Great warranty; inexpensive; manual transmission; compact length makes for easy maneuvering in urban environments.

Below Average: Poor resale values; small dealer network; no significant updates since 2011

Consensus: Mitsubishi’s 2019 Outlander Sport is a respectable compact crossover SUV, with a choice between front- and all-wheel drive and a couple different engines (2.0-liter and 2.4-liter inline-4). It’s one of the few members of its class offered with a 5-speed manual transmission, and it makes good use of its small size, although 6-footers may feel a little cramped in the back. It hasn’t had a significant redesign since 2011 which contributes to its resale values lagging most others in its class.

Each year, it seems, more and more American consumers are turning from passenger cars to crossovers and SUVs.

In the compact category, Kia brings its 2019 Sportage and Mitsubishi offers the 2019 Outlander Sport. Each offers a couple different 4-cylinder engines and the choice of front- or all-wheel drive. More unusually, they both offer outstanding warranties, including 10 years or 100,000 miles on the powertrain.

Beyond that, the differences become more significant, as the Kia’s a bit fresher, and its 4-cylinder makes the same fuel economy as the Mitsubishi but with significantly more power and torque. The Kia also offers a fair number of safety and tech features, some of which are only found on upper trim levels of the Mitsubishi. And Mitsubishi has a much smaller dealer network.

Nearly identical fuel mileage; same warranty; optional front- or all-wheel drive

Kia Sportage Advantages

More power, higher safety rating, more safety and tech features

Mitsubishi Outlander Sport Advantages

Lower base price and significantly lower prices as you move up trim levels; manual transmission on base model

Final Recommendation

If price is your main factor, or you really want a manual transmission, the 2019 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport is the choice here. And price is a significant factor. The Mitsubishi starts nearly $3K cheaper than the Kia and tops out nearly $8K lower. Other than that, however, the Kia Sportage is the way to go. From its spunky optional turbocharged engine to its nice luxury touches and its suite of safety and tech features to its better resale value, the Kia wins this one.
