2019 Nissan Kicks
Starting Price: $19,535| Price Yours
Above Average: Stylish, efficient, and loaded with personality
Below Average: No all-wheel drive, jittery ride
Consensus: The 2019 Nissan Kicks is safe, practical and its pricing starts at under $20,000.
The 2019 Kia Soul offers an eye-catching entry into the subcompact SUV scene with its upright, boxy styling and funky features. It comes standard with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto but lacks the all-wheel drive that other options like the Mini Countryman or the Fiat 500X offer. It drives very similarly to the competitive set with the optional turbocharged engine, though it's not as engaging as the Mazda CX-3. The transmission leaves something to be desired as it tends to hunt and can be slow to shift. While it claims to seat five people comfortably, the Kia Soul is more suited to just four. Tons of cargo space inside makes it easy to haul things in, and the Soul has neat design touches like pulsating speaker lights to make it stand out from the rest of the rather milquetoast pack. We recommend going for the Soul Plus trim which starts at $21,430 and offers more power and options than the base level.
The 2019 Nissan Kicks is a subcompact SUV that offers a mix of style, fuel-efficiency and practicality all for a starting price under $20,000. It's the replacement vehicle for the discontinued Nissan Juke, and while it's not exactly fast, the 1.6-liter engine gives off enough power and torque to merge into quick moving traffic. We liked how nimble and light-on-its-feet the Kicks felt in our test drive, but did find that, on the highway, the short wheelbase made for a bit of a jittery ride. That is somewhat absorbed by the NASA-inspired "zero-gravity" seats that Nissan has put into the Kicks. Inside the Kicks comes with a 7-inch touch-screen infotainment system but you'll have to step up to the SV line to get Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. You can get your Nissan Kicks with a contrasting roof color if you are so inclined and we'd recommend splurging for the larger 17-inch aluminum alloy wheels to make it look even better.
Both the Kia Soul and the Nissan Kicks have distinctive exterior design and neither come with all-wheel drive.
Kia Soul Advantages
The Kia Soul gets more interior space and more legroom and headroom for passengers. It also does not look like any other crossover on the market.
Nissan Kicks Advantages
Crossover styling and looks.
If you’re looking for something that isn’t your run-of-the-mill SUV, the 2019 Kia Soul or the 2019 Nissan Kicks are both good bets. For our money, however, we’d go for the Soul because it doesn’t look like every other crossover out there and it comes with an impressive warranty.
