2020 Kia Soul

Starting Price: $18,4850 | Price Yours

Above Average: Distinctive looking, available turbocharged engine, and a bunch of high-end features.

Below Average: Driver-assist features are only available on one trim and the Soul isn't very agile on the road.

Consensus: The 2020 Kia Soul has a boxy, upright design that makes it stand out on the road and offer up a ton of interior space. It's a competent daily driver with a great warranty.

2019 Fiat 500L

Starting Price: $23,405 | Price Yours

Above Average: Tons of room in a compact package

Below Average: Less efficient and more expensive than many competitors in this range.

Consensus: The 2019 Fiat 500L is great if you want quirky styling in a compact vehicle, but it lags behind in many other areas.

The Kia Soul offers an eye-catching entry into the subcompact SUV scene that has been redesigned while keeping intact its upright, boxy styling and funky features. It comes standard with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto but lacks the all-wheel drive that other options like the Mini Countryman or the Fiat 500x offer. It drives very similarly to the competitive set with the optional turbocharged engine, though it's not as engaging as the Mazda CX-3. The transmission leaves something to be desired, however, as it tends to hunt and can be slow to shift. While it claims to seat five people comfortably, the Kia Soul is more suited to just four. Tons of cargo space inside makes it easy to haul things in, and the Soul has neat design touches like pulsating speaker lights to make it stand out from the rest of the rather milquetoast pack.

RELATED: 2020 Kia Soul First Review

The Fiat 500L is a funky little Italian designed vehicle that offers tons of room and flexibility in a compact package. It comes standard with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and starts just shy of the $22,000 mark. That's where the good news ends, however. It doesn't offer any modern safety features like lane-keeping assistance or automatic emergency braking, it isn’t a lot of fun to drive, and it has pretty terrible resale value. For 2019 the Fiat500L gets minimal updates including a universal garage opener in the Trekking and Lounge models, and the Urbana edition gets blacked-out exterior accents. The Fiat 500L gets the same engine as its smaller 500 Abarth (which is much more fun to drive), but its added bulk and standard 6-speed transmission leave a lot to be desired on the road. While the Fiat 500L does soak up road imperfections and acceleration is acceptable, it gets buffeted around by gusty winds, and because of its longer wheelbase, it has a rather large turning radius. Inside the Fiat 500L is roomy and offers more than 22 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats.

Similarities

Both the Kia Soul and the Fiat 500L have a distinctive exterior design.

Kia Soul Advantages

The Kia Soul gets more interior space and more legroom and headroom for passengers. It also does not look like any other crossover on the market.

Fiat 500L Advantages

Characteristically Italian styling.

Final Recommendation

If you’re looking for something that isn’t your run-of-the-mill SUV, the 2020 Kia Soul is your best bet. The Fiat500L lacks in safety equipment that comes as standard in the Kia, and it doesn't get as good of a warranty.
