Above Average: A stylish, fun-to-drive midsize sedan that comes so well-equipped it could be from a more premium marque.

The 2019 Kia Optima gets a handsome new exterior as well as a suite of upgraded Advanced Driver Assistant Systems (ADAS) as standard including things like forward collision avoidance assistance, driver attention warning, and lane keeping assist. While most people may not consider the Optima a sport sedan, our editors think it comes awfully close. The transmission is smooth and responsive, and the Optima offers four different driving modes that make it enjoyable to drive in a variety of conditions. The interior of the Optima has a ton of high-quality materials and includes a Harman Kardon sound system. For 2019 Kia updated it’s UVO infotainment system making it more user friendly, too.

For 2019 the Mazda6 gets standard drivers aids including emergency braking with pedestrian detection, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alerts, lane-keeping assistance, and adaptive cruise control. There is also a new Grand Touring Reserve trim added to the lineup. On the road the Mazda6 is a joy to drive. It offers plenty of driving engagement and has a family-friendly ride quality. You can opt for a 2.5-liter inline-4 or a turbocharged version of that engine. Rear legroom is a bit tight, but the rest of the interior and the front seats are high-quality and comfortable. In order to get Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, you need to step up to a higher trim level (Touring). For our money we recommend coming in at least the Touring level to get the right bells and whistles.
Both the Kia Optima and the Mazda6 offer tons of technology for a very good price.
Kia Optima Advantages
Good looking, tons of standard safety equipment and both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay come as standard.
Great looking and well-priced.
It is a dead tie between these two vehicles as we rated both at 4.4 out of 5. Both the Kia Optima and Mazda6 offer fantastic technology and options for very competitive prices. It is really going to come down to personal preference when deciding between these two midsize vehicles.
