2019 Hyundai Sonata

Starting Price: $23,420| Price Yours

Above Average: Tons of tech packed into an affordable and stylish sedan

Consensus: Packed with comfort and value the 2019 Sonata offers a ton of car for the money.

The 2019 Kia Optima gets a handsome new exterior as well as a suite of upgraded Advanced Driver Assistant Systems (ADAS) as standard including things like forward collision avoidance assistance, driver attention warning, and lane keeping assist. While most people may not consider the Optima a sport sedan, our editors think it comes awfully close. The transmission is smooth and responsive, and the Optima offers four different driving modes that make it enjoyable to drive in a variety of conditions. The interior of the Optima has a ton of high-quality materials and includes a Harman Kardon sound system. For 2019 Kia updated it's UVO infotainment system making it more user-friendly, too.

For 2019 the Hyundai Sonata carries over from the 2018 model year, though some packages are available at a lower price point. The Sonata comes with a variety of drivetrains including a naturally aspirated, turbocharged, hybrid, or plug-in hybrid varieties, and on the road, it offers sufficient power to get you where you’re going. Our favorite engine is the 2.0-liter turbocharged version that puts out 245 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque which makes the Sonata feel light and quick. It's paired to an 8-speed automatic transmission that is both smooth and responsive. The electric-assist steering has a surprisingly natural feel. Inside the Sonata offers a premium look and feel without the premium price. The base SE model comes with cloth seats and a well-designed, 7-inch touch screen as well as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Step up to the Sonata Limited, and you get automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assistance, and smart cruise control. The top Sonata Limited will run you around $33,000.

Kia Optima Advantages

Final Recommendation

It is a dead tie between these two vehicles as we rated both at 4.4 out of 5. Both the Kia Optima and Hyundai Sonata offer fantastic technology and options for very competitive prices. They’re both built on the same platform, too. Both come with stellar warranties and offer efficiency and comfort. It is really going to come down to personal preference when deciding between these two midsize vehicles.
