2019 Kia Niro

Starting Price: $24,485|Kia Niro Pricing

Above Average: 50 mpg combined fuel economy; respectable acceleration in Sport mode; Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility in all trims

Below Average: Other hybrids get better fuel economy and offer more plug-in range in full-electric mode; no all-wheel drive option

Consensus: The 2019 Kia Niro is a roomy and spacious hybrid small SUV that earns up to 50 mpg in combined driving. Power may be low, but its quick-shifting 6-speeed dual-clutch automatic and a sporty suspension make it fun to drive. The Niro also comes with Kia’s legendary warranty.

2019 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross

Starting Price: $24,975|Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross Pricing

Above Average: Outstanding warranty; good handling; sloping roof gives it a unique profile among crossovers

Below Average: Resale value is not very good; too soon to assess its reliability; low on power; rear seat legroom is lacking; lacks some otherwise standard driver assists

Consensus: The 2019 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross is a sharp-looking entry-level crossover SUV offered at a low price and with a very attractive warranty. It does come with only one engine offering, however, which isn’t terribly powerful, and resale value isn’t promising.

Both the 2019 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross and 2019 Kia Niro are relatively new members of the small crossover SUV class, each with its own positives.

The Kia is a hybrid, so it gets exceptional fuel economy, and there are both plug-in hybrid and electric variants. The Mitsubishi only comes with one engine, however, and it’s not terribly powerful. While the Kia is more of a wagon, the Mitsubishi is a crossover, but its sloping roof design gives it a sportier look than the usual more upright designs of its competitors. Both have relatively respectable handling, although only the Eclipse Cross is offered with optional all-wheel drive.

Because both models are also relatively new, it’s hard to judge reliability ratings, but each comes with a very impressive 100,000-mile powertrain warranty. It’s also too soon to judge resale value, but so far Mitsubishi as a brand has not been great.

Similarities

Both offer exceptional warranties, have nearly identical starting prices, and have sharp looks.

Kia Niro Advantages

Optional plug-in hybrid as well as full EV models; quicker; more headroom and legroom both front and rear; considerably better fuel economy

Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross Advantages

Optional all-wheel drive; higher tow rating; fully loaded, it’s still about $4,000 cheaper

Final Recommendation

If you simply must have all-wheel drive, then the 2019 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross is the winner here. If you’re OK with front-wheel drive, however, the 2019 Kia Niro takes this one.

We like the sloping rear shape of the Mitsubishi, putting it more in line with the designs of some more upmarket crossovers, but aside from that, the Kia’s the better bet. From its impressive 50 mpg combined fuel economy to its long list of standard features to Kia’s solid reputation for reliability, the Niro is the obvious choice here.
