2019 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid

Starting Price: $35,970 | Price Yours

Above Average: All-wheel wheel drive, full-charge in 5 hours.

Below Average: Towing capacity is just 1,000 pounds and the rear storage capacity is 25-percent smaller than the regular Crosstrek thanks to the placement of the battery pack.

Consensus:  Want to take your hybrid off road? The Crosstrek Hybrid might be your ticket.

The 2019 Kia Niro Hybrid is a nimble hybrid with enough room for 5. It accelerates quickly and has a few optional drive modes including Sport that improves the 6-speed automatic’s shift points, gives more feel to the throttle, and firms up the steering.  The electric motor and engine pairing in the Kia Niro Hybrid is so good that it’s hard to remember that you are driving a hybrid.

Inside, the Niro has a clean design with a variety of high-quality materials and very comfortable seats. We recommend the Niro LX because it offers keyless entry, push-button start, UVO3 infotainment with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a rearview camera, and 7-inch touchscreen. If you want to step up to the plug-in version, it will cost $5,000 and deliver 26 miles of pure EV range.

The 2019 Subaru Crosstrek gets all the amenities of Crosstrek Limited plus a plug-in hybrid system. In fact, the Crosstrek Hybrid is packed to the gills with great stuff including standard leather upholstery, power driver’s seat, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, Subaru’s EyeSight Driver’s Assistance Technology with all its bells and whistles, and pretty much every safety feature and warning your heart could desire. Since there’s only one trim package that adds a power moonroof, heated seats, navigation, and an 8-speaker Harmon Kardon audio system, you know you are getting the top of the line Crosstrek Hybrid.

Around town the Crosstrek Hybrid is comfortable and accommodating, though certainly not a rocket ship on freeway onramps, Subaru says it’s faster than its gasoline brothers in its hustle to 60 mph by a full second. In pure EV mode, the Crosstrek delivers a 17-mile range.

Similarities

Great fuel economy, ample interior space and characteristic styling.

Kia Niro Advantages

Apple CarPlay and Android auto come as standard, 5-year/60,000-mile warranty.

Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid Advantages

All wheel drive and ample ground clearance to go off-roading should you so desire.

Final Recommendation

If you’re the off-roading type, need all-wheel drive, and have the cash to spare the Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid would be our vehicle of choice. With an EPA estimated 90 MPGe combined its fuel efficient enough to make gassing up a less-frequent event.

However, if fuel economy is your goal, you may want to step up to the Kia Niro PHEV. While more expensive than the standard car, it costs much less than the Subaru and delivers farther pure EV range.
