2019 Mazda CX-3

Starting Price: $21,435 | Price Yours

Above Average: Athletic handling, tons of cargo space when you fold down the back seats, striking styling and luxury interior appointments.

Below Average: Back seat room is tight, not ideal for off-roading, no Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.

Consensus: The 2019 Mazda CX-3 melds great handling with luxury touches and wraps it all in an affordable package.

The 2019 Jeep Renegade is a standout in the crowded subcompact SUV market. With two engine choices and advanced 4-wheel-drive (4WD), it's an excellent pick for someone who wants a comfortable crossover with the ability to actually do some real off-roading. It's got rugged good looks on the outside and inside you can fit four full-size adults comfortably (not really five). If you’re looking for something that will be adequate at commuting, the Jeep Renegade ticks that box, though the engine is a bit sluggish. The Mazda CX-3 offers a much more athletic performance. The Jeep comes in the Latitude trim with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and in true Jeep fashion, there are plenty of fun Easter eggs around the interior. With the rear seats up you get 18.5 cubic feet of storage. That balloons to 50 cubic feet of space with the seats down. In everything except the base model, the front seat folds to make space for longer cargo items. The Renegade comes standard with a 1.3-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that makes 177 horsepower and 200 lb-ft of torque. Step up to the 2.4-liter inline-4 for 180 horsepower and 175 lb-ft of torque.

The 2019 Mazda CX-3 offers a good combination of styling and function for the right price. It comes with a 2.0-liter inline-4 that makes 148 horsepower and 146 lb-ft of torque, and it won't leave you white-knuckling it on a short highway merge. Mazda is, after all, known for creating great cars that are fun to drive and come complete with ample power. While it may feel a bit cramped in the second row, the CX-3 offers excellent handling and luxury touches inside. For 2019 the CX-3 gets a new electronic parking brake that frees up more space, the front seats have been redone to make them more comfortable, and it gets a slight engine tweak for efficiency and to make it a bit quieter. You can opt for all-wheel drive at the higher trim, and the interior at any level feels surprisingly upscale. Things like push-button start and available leather seating make it feel like a more luxurious SUV than some of its competitors.

Similarities

Design laden small SUVs that offer great driving characteristics and comfort for 5 people.

2019 Jeep Renegade Advantages

Off-road capable and really fun, iconic styling.

2019 Mazda CX-3 Advantages

Great styling both inside and out, luxurious interior, quiet and efficient engine, and athletic, fun-to-drive handling.

Final Recommendation

The Mazda CX-3 just barely edges out the Jeep Renegade in this comparison because of its price-to-value ratio and because the CX-3 is a bit more fun to drive in daily conditions. If you’re looking for something off-road worthy though, we’d recommend the Jeep Renegade over the Mazda CX-3.
