2019 Hyundai Kona

Starting Price: $21,035 | Price Yours

Above Average: Sporty, fun-to-drive and has a really unique look.

Below Average: Rear seat legroom is lacking, base engine is pokey, and there’s no adaptive cruise control.

Consensus: The 2019 Hyundai Kona is a brand new entry into the subcompact SUV game. It offers unique style, tons of options and an impressive warranty.

The 2019 Jeep Renegade is a standout in the crowded subcompact SUV market. With two engine choices and advanced 4-wheel-drive (4WD), it's an excellent pick for someone who wants a comfortable crossover with the ability to actually do some real off-roading. It's got rugged good looks on the outside and inside you can fit four full-size adults comfortably (not really five). If you're looking for something that will be adequate at commuting, the Jeep Renegade ticks that box, though the engine is a bit sluggish. Competitors like the Mazda CX-3 offer a more athletic performance. The Renegade comes in the Latitude trim with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. With the rear seats up you get 18.5 cubic feet of storage. That balloons to 50 cubic feet of space with the seats down. In everything except the base model, the front seat folds to make space for longer cargo items. The Renegade comes standard with a 1.3-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that makes 177 horsepower and 200 lb-ft of torque. Step up to the 2.4-liter inline-4 for 180 horsepower and 175 lb-ft of torque.

The 2019 Hyundai Kona may lack adaptive cruise control (the Jeep Renegade can be optioned with it, and the Kona has basic cruise control as standard), but it comes packed with a wealth of other upscale features and standard driver assistants that make it a great little crossover. While all-wheel drive is optional and really only useful in snow (not in offroading), the Kona is a surprisingly comfortable cruiser. The Kona puts out more horsepower than most of the competitors in the class (when equipped with the 1.6-liter turbocharged inline-4 that puts out 175 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque), though it doesn't offer as much power as the Jeep Renegade. We didn't care for the somewhat clunky 7-speed dual-clutch transmission that shuddered at speeds below 5 mph, but we did love that the AWD version we drove came with independent rear suspension, making it a joy to maneuver in tight spaces and giving a smooth ride on the road. The Kona has both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Hyundai gets bonus points for offering the Kona EV in California where it gets slightly better range than the Chevrolet Bolt at 258 miles per charge.

Final Recommendation

The 2019 Hyundai Kona beats the Jeep Renegade because it comes with such a stellar warranty and it’s so packed with options at the base level. There's no need to step up to higher trims to get Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and it’s got a ton of style.
