2019 Honda HR-V

Starting Price: $21,515 | Price Yours

Above Average: Good ground clearance, spacious interior, great fuel economy

Below Average: Somewhat underpowered and noisy, lacks standard safety features at the entry level.

Consensus: The 2019 Honda HR-V is the workhorse of the subcompact SUV scene, with one of the most spacious interiors for a vehicle with its footprint.

The 2019 Jeep Renegade is a standout in the crowded subcompact SUV market. With two engine choices and advanced 4-wheel-drive (4WD), it's an excellent pick for someone who wants a comfortable crossover with the ability to actually do some real off-roading. It’s got rugged good looks on the outside and inside you can fit four full-size adults comfortably. If you’re looking for something that will be adequate at commuting, the Jeep Renegade ticks that box. Competitors like the Mazda CX-3 and the Honda HR-V offer more athletic performance, however. Renegade comes in the Latitude trim with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and in true Jeep fashion, there are plenty of fun Easter eggs around the interior. With the rear seats up you get 18.5 cubic feet of storage. That balloons to 50 cubic feet of space with the seats down. In everything except the base model, the front seat folds to make space for longer cargo items. The Renegade comes standard with a 1.3-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that makes 177 horsepower and 200 lb-ft of torque. Step up to the 2.4-liter inline-4 for 180 horsepower and 175 lb-ft of torque.

The 2019 Honda HR-V combines a wealth of space, practicality and nice-enough interior to make it a good subcompact SUV. For 2019 the Honda HR-V gets some updated styling and (drumroll, please) a volume knob! Honda has added Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. To get safety features like forward collision mitigation and lane departure warning you have to step up to the EX trim level. Behind the wheel, the HR-V feels a bit underpowered, and the 141 hp 1.8-liter engine tends to feel somewhat sluggish when paired with Honda's CVT transmission. The ride, however, is comfortable and smooth. The interior space on the 2019 HR-V is ample for such a small SUV. With the addition of Honda’s Magic Seat that flips up so you can carry taller items in the second row, it makes the interior feel especially spacious.

Similarities

Small SUVs that offer function and styling at a very good price.

2019 Jeep Renegade Advantages

Off-road capable and fun, iconic styling.

2019 Honda HR-V Advantages

Ample interior space, a comfortable ride with natural feeling steering. The addition of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is also a bonus.

Final Recommendation

The 2019 Honda HR-V wins this comparison for its resale, its acceleration (no sweaty palms on that short merge) and a suite of safety equipment. While the 2019 Jeep Renegade is a solid contender, it falls down against the HR-V when it comes to fuel efficiency, too.
