Above Average: Lots of high tech additions, and a 2,000-pound tow rating.
Below Average: Lacks in power and advanced safety features.
Consensus: The 2019 Ford EcoSport has rugged good looks and offers a sporty drive.
The 2019 Jeep Renegade is a standout in the crowded subcompact SUV market. With two engine choices and advanced 4-wheel-drive (4WD), it's an excellent pick for someone who wants a comfortable crossover with the ability to actually do some real off-roading. It's got rugged good looks on the outside and inside you can fit four full-size adults comfortably (not really five). If you're looking for something that will be adequate at commuting, the Jeep Renegade ticks that box, though the engine is a bit sluggish. Competitors like the Mazda CX-3 offer more athletic performance. The Renegade comes in the Latitude trim with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and in true Jeep fashion, there are plenty of fun Easter eggs around the interior. With the rear seats up you get 18.5 cubic feet of storage. That balloons to 50 cubic feet of space with the seats down. In everything except the base model, the front seat folds to make space for longer cargo items. The Renegade comes standard with a 1.3-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that makes 177 horsepower and 200 lb-ft of torque. Step up to the 2.4-liter inline-4 for 180 horsepower and 175 lb-ft of torque.
The 2019 Ford EcoSport stands out in a sea of subcompact SUVs with its bold styling and loads of technology. The base EcoSport comes equipped with a 1.0-liter 3-cylinder EcoBoost engine that puts out an anemic 123 horsepower and 125 lb-ft of torque. For our money we’d go with the 2.0-liter inline-4 engine on the AWD drive EcoSport that puts out 166-horsepower and 149 lb-ft of torque, knowing full well that fuel economy suffers in the larger engine (23/29 mpg city/highway vs. 27/29 mpg city/highway in the base engine). The interior of the Ford EcoSport is a mixed bag. It lacks in rear seat space, and there are lots of hard plastics everywhere. The big infotainment screen is a nice plus, however. We also liked the swing-out rear door and the commanding seating position from the driver’s seat. The EcoSport also gets bonus points for its 2,000-lb tow rating, available all-wheel drive, and for coming with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay as standard.
Small SUVs that offer function and styling at a very good price.
2019 Jeep Renegade Advantages
Off-road capable and really fun, iconic styling.
2019 Ford EcoSport Advantages
The improved Sync3 system comes with an 8-inch touch screen that is easy to operate. It also comes standard with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
The 2019 Jeep Renegade beats out the Ford EcoSport in this comparison. Between the feeble engine at the base level and the hard plastics throughout the cabin, the EcoSport just seems like it’s out of its depth when compared to the Jeep Renegade.
