Starting Price: $22,195 | Price Yours

Above Average: Advanced driver safety and assistance, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come at the entry level, peppy and fun to drive, optional all-wheel drive.

Below Average: Low resale value, higher ownership costs, pretty good fuel economy

Consensus: The 2019 Chevrolet Trax takes the efficiency and affordability of a sub-compact car and puts it in a subcompact SUV format.

The 2019 Jeep Renegade is a standout in the crowded subcompact SUV market. With two engine choices and advanced 4-wheel-drive (4WD), it's an excellent pick for someone who wants a comfortable crossover with the ability to actually do some real off-roading. It's got rugged good looks on the outside and inside you can fit four full-size adults comfortably. If you're looking for something that will be adequate at commuting, the Jeep Renegade ticks that box. Competitors like the Mazda CX-3 and the Honda HR-V offers more athletic performance, however. It comes in the Latitude trim with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and in true Jeep fashion, there are plenty of fun Easter eggs around the interior. With the rear seats up you get 18.5 cubic feet of storage. That balloons to 50 cubic feet of space with the seats down. In everything except the base model, the front seat folds to make space for longer cargo items. The Renegade comes standard with a 1.3-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that makes 177 horsepower and 200 lb-ft of torque. Step up to the 2.4-liter inline-4 for 180 horsepower and 175 lb-ft of torque.

RELATED: 2019 Jeep Renegade Review

The 2019 Chevrolet Trax is a fun to drive compact-crossover SUV packed with good technology and driver safety and assistance packages. On the road, it feels nimble, and it gets better fuel economy than some of the other competitors like the Mazda CX-3 and the Jeep Renegade. The Trax gets a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that makes 138 horsepower and 148 lb. ft. of torque which is less than the base engine in the Jeep Renegade.  Inside the front seats are comfortable for long weekend jaunts and, while it's not super quiet at highway speeds, it’s still quiet enough to have conversations on the Bluetooth system. The Trax also comes with built-in 4G LTE Wifi in case your passengers want to surf the web while you drive. Inside the Trax is modern and attractive with ample room for passengers and their cargo.

2019 Chevrolet Trax Advantages

In-car WiFi, fun to drive, comes at the entry level with safety and driver assistance features and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Final Recommendation

The 2019 Jeep Renegade wins in this comparison for its fun styling and resale value. While the Trax offers a wealth of tech that you don’t have to upgrade to get, its long-term ownership costs are a negative. We recommend the Jeep Renegade over the Chevrolet Trax.
