Consensus: A refined compact SUV that hasn't forgotten its Jeep off-road roots

The mainstream compact SUV of choice for SUV purists.

There are very few compact SUVs that can boast any ability in the dirt. The Jeep Cherokee goes a step further, being the only one that has genuine off-road credibility and capability. It combines that with the daily drivability and practicality of the segment's best-sellers. While there are minor updates for 2018 -- the Sport model has been dropped and the Latitude Plus joins the line -- the big news is that the Cherokee will get a significant refresh for 2019

Driving It

"While you probably expect the Jeep Cherokee to stand apart from rivals like the Honda CR-V where the pavement ends, you might be pleasantly surprised to know that it's quite comfortable and quiet on-road, too. It's not very fun to drive in corners, but it shines on the highway, taking some of the misery from a long commute. The standard 4-cylinder isn't very peppy, so bring patience for passing and getting up to speed." Find out more in our 2018 Jeep Cherokee full review.

AWD Advantage

Most compact SUVs offer all-wheel drive, but most could be considered "AWD Light" compared to the Cherokee's offering. The Cherokee's drivetrain lineup comprises not one, not two, but a choice of three different AWD systems, capped by Jeep Active Drive Lock with a two-speed transfer unit, low range and a locking rear differential. The Cherokee isn't a Wrangler, but it's worthy of the name and the familiar grille nevertheless.

Build and Price

The 2018 Jeep Cherokee starts at above $25,000 (with front-wheel drive) and nears $44,000 for a Cherokee Overland 4x4 with V6, leather and all the bells and whistles. Build and price your own 2018 Jeep Cherokee to unlock this week's Fair Purchase Price, 5-Year Cost to Own and more.

Consumer Reviews

K-Go is impressed with the Cherokee's combination of active safety features and V6 power for the price, and adds, "I was almost surprised that all the technology, including the parking assist actually works in the real world. I regularly manage 32 mpg when driving on highways (@75 mph), and I like the linear power delivery of the V6. I also enjoyed the remote start with heated seat and steering wheel very much during the winter months. The cargo space is quite limited and I don't like that the gearbox doesn't have a proper manual shifting option." Read more Jeep Cherokee consumer reviews.
