2019 Chevrolet Bolt

Starting Price:  $37,495 | Price Yours

Above Average:  Range, rear seat room

Below Average: Cargo space, many driver-assist features are optional, missing the latest in high tech options

Consensus: The 2019 Chevrolet Bolt offers nearly the same range as the Kona, as well as the same price tag, but with a larger rear seat and longer history.

The 2019 Hyundai Kona EV is new this year, based on the popular Kona subcompact crossover. As is typical for Hyundai cars, the Kona EV arrives with an attractive price, a long list of standard and available features and a fantastic standard warranty. Most impressive, however, is the Kona EV’s 258-mile range, which out-distances just about everything in this segment. It is also one of the few cars in its price range that comes standard with a DC fast charger. The Kona EV’s SUV-like styling helps it look cooler than most car-based electrics, although its rear seat legroom cargo space remain on the small side. The Kona EV offers a full suite of standard driver assists including automatic emergency braking, lane keep assist and automatic high beams.

The Chevrolet Bolt cost the same as the Kona, although it doesn’t come as well equipped. With a 238-mile range, the Chevy can run further than most electric cars, but comes up about 20 miles short of the Hyundai’s max range. Like the Kona, the Bolt looks more SUV than hatchback, and its rear seat is much more inviting for taller passengers than in the Hyundai. However, driver assists that are standard on the Kona are optional on the Bolt and only offered on the middle and top line trims. The Kona also has a longer standard warranty and a bigger cargo space. Charge times of about 9.5-hours on a Level 2 charger are the same for both cars.

Hyundai Kona Advantages

The Kona delivers a slightly longer range, a larger cargo area and more standard features including collision avoidance and a DC fast charger. The Kona’s warranty is longer, its turning diameter tighter and its price when comparably equipped is cheaper.

Chevrolet Bolt Advantages

The Bolt offers a roomier rear seat, a longer track record and a huge dealer network.

Similarities

Both the Bolt and Kona offer 200-plus miles of range on a single charge, both offer Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, and both cost the same. Both can be fitted with upscale features as well as advanced driver assist systems. Charge times are roughly the same regardless of charging method.

Final Recommendation

For the money, the Kona clearly offers more features, a better warranty and a longer range. Both cars qualify for the $7,500 federal tax credit, as well as other local incentives that vary by state. Keep in mind that the Bolt’s tax incentive will drop to half this summer, then by half again at the end of the year before being phased out altogether in mid-2020.
