2019 Honda Pilot

Starting Price: $32,445 | Price yours

Above Average: Strong resale and reliability, 8-passenger comfort, potent V6 engine, advanced driver safety systems come standard

Below Average: Not very exciting to drive, options grouped by trim

Consensus: A value-rich family hauling machine that, when equipped with AWD, also happens to be quite competent in foul weather and light off-road situations.

2019 Acura MDX

Starting Price: $45,295 | Price yours

Above Average: Good safety and reliability history, powerful hybrid model, low price compared to rivals

Below Average: Needs more luxury and high tech gadgets, no V8 or diesel option, only seats seven

Consensus: An attractive luxury SUV made all the more attractive by the AWD hybrid version, but still not up the luxury and performance standards set by Audi, Lincoln and BMW.

Although the Honda Pilot and Acura MDX share a similar architecture, the two diverge down very different paths. The Pilot, which has a mild refresh for 2019, is a family vehicle, priced to appeal to minivan owners looking to get out of their minivan. With seating for eight, standard Honda Sensing driver assist and an excellent reputation for reliability and resale, the Pilot is the SUV for those who value, what else, value above all else. The MDX offers a different approach, with a sportier vibe that results in reduced interior room, but a more exciting driving experience. Although nicely equipped, the MDX doesn’t offer the latest in luxury and technology. Then again, the MDX’s price tag isn’t ridiculously out of reach. The MDX Sport Hybrid brings more power and better fuel economy, not to mention more aggressive looks and suspension tuning.

Honda Pilot Advantages

Strong resale, 8-passenger seating, standard Honda Sensing, lots of room for people and cargo

Acura MDX Advantages

Hybrid model, sporty styling, one of the least expensive luxury SUVs in its class, good safety ratings

Good reliability ratings, standard driver assist system, strong engine, reserved but attractive styling

Final Recommendation

The Pilot makes a fine family vehicle with seating for eight and a massive cargo hold, plus the Touring trim is almost as luxurious as the MDX. The MDX’s best trim is the Sport Hybrid, which brings more power, better fuel economy and a sportier driving experience along with a touch of eco-friendliness.
