2019 Chevrolet Trax

Starting Price: $22,195 | Price yours

Above Average: Advanced driver safety and assistance, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come at the entry level, peppy and fun to drive, optional all-wheel drive

Below Average: Lower resale value, higher ownership costs, so-so fuel economy

Consensus: The 2019 Chevrolet Trax takes the efficiency and affordability of a subcompact car and puts it in a subcompact SUV format.

The 2019 Honda HR-V combines a wealth of space, practicality and nice-enough interior to make it a good subcompact SUV. For 2019 the Honda HR-V gets some updated styling and (for those who can’t stand the sliding volume control on most Honda infotainment systems) a volume knob! They’ve also added Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. To get safety features like forward collision mitigation and lane departure warning you have to step up to the EX trim level. The HR-V feels a bit underpowered, and the 141-horsepower 1.8-liter engine tends to feel somewhat sluggish when paired with Honda’s CVT transmission. The ride, however, is comfortable and smooth. The interior space in the 2019 HR-V is ample for such a small SUV. Honda’s Magic Seat flips up so you can carry taller items in the second row, and when it’s up the interior feels especially spacious. The 2019 Chevrolet Trax is a comfortable subcompact SUV packed with good technology and driver safety and assistance packages. On the road it feels nimble and it gets better fuel economy than competitors like the Mazda CX-3 and the Jeep Renegade. The front seats are comfortable for long weekend jaunts, and while it’s not super quiet at highway speeds, it’s still quiet enough to have phone conversations via Bluetooth. In addition, the Trax comes with built in 4G LTE wi-fi in case your passengers want to surf the web while you drive. Inside the Trax is modern and attractive with ample room for passengers and their cargo.

Small SUVs that offer function and styling at a very good price.

Final Recommendation

The 2019 Honda HR-V wins this comparison for its higher resale value and lower ownership costs over the long term. While the 2019 Chevrolet Trax is a solid contender, it falls down against the HR-V when it comes to fuel efficiency, too.
