2019 Honda Accord

Starting Price: $24,615 | Price yours

Above Average: Hybrid earns almost 50 mpg; sporty model with turbo and 6-speed manual; excellent resale value; advanced safety and driver-assistance features; great trunk space

Below Average: No V6 model or all-wheel drive; push-button gear selector can sometimes be irritating

Consensus: The 2019 Honda Accord leads its class of midsize sedans in nearly every metric. From a Sport model with a feisty turbocharged engine mated to a 6-speed manual transmission, to a Hybrid that earns 48 mpg, there’s an Accord for every taste. Virtually unchanged for 2019 save the loss of an engine choice on the Touring model, the Accord’s got style, personality, plenty of room for five, ample trunk space, great value, and rock-solid Honda reliability. And when it’s time to sell, the Accord’s resale value is excellent as well. No wonder the 2019 Accord has won our KBB Midsize Car Best Buy award for the second year in a row.

2019 Honda Civic

Starting Price: $20,345 | Price yours

Above Average:  Lots of options, from coupe to hatchback to sedan and eco-friendly to sporty; great standard safety features, even at lower trim levels; top-notch safety scores; feels bigger on the inside than it is

Below Average: Gets pricey as you go up the trims and add options; styling may be too much for some; no diesel or hybrid options; no all-wheel drive option; can’t get a manual transmission with the turbo

Consensus: Versatile, economical, and offered in an array of body styles unmatched by its brethren in the compact class, the 2019 Honda Civic remains a standout for its variety of body styles and engines, its sharp styling, and its impressive array of safety and driver assist features. Still, Honda knows how competitive the compact car class is, so it makes several changes to the 2019 Civic to keep its entrant at the top of their game. Like the Accord, the Civic earns top marks for safety, maintains its value well, and offers excellent driver-assist and safety features even at the entry level trim. With many options and packages, prices can climb pretty quickly, particularly with the Civic and its high-performance Type R variant. But every 2019 Civic offers comfort, safety, and excellent driving dynamics in a stylish, efficient package. No wonder its our KBB Compact Car Best Buy for the fifth year in a row.

Final Recommendation

The 2019 Honda Civic and 2019 Honda Accord, more than competitors, are simply brothers. The Civic leads its team in JV football, whereas the Accord, a senior, is captain of the varsity squad. Each is a leader in its respective class, with excellent build quality, rock-solid reliability, and excellent resale values. They both consistently earn the KBB Best Buy award in their respective classes.

Being a midsize, the Accord offers more of everything: more space, bigger trunk, more comfort, higher price. But the Civic is larger inside than it might appear. The Accord comes only as a sedan, where the Civic is offered as both a hatchback and a coupe as well. The Civic is also easier to park. So it really comes down to a question of your needs and your budget. If a compact sedan is all you need, or you prefer a coupe’s style or the versatility of a hatchback, then the Civic is an excellent choice, but if you want a stylish midsize sedan that’s fun to drive, gets great gas mileage, and has plenty of space for passengers and cargo, then you can’t go wrong with the Accord.
