Consensus: In the midsize pickup world, the Toyota Tacoma has been the standard-bearer for pretty much… always. It’s renowned throughout the world for its durability and toughness. A huge seller in the U.S., the 2019 Toyota Tacoma Double Cab also comes in more than 30 configurations, from luxury to off-road to sporty, with a choice between a rather anemic 2.7-liter four-cylinder and a more powerful 3.5-liter V6. There’s a Tacoma for just about every need but bear in mind that its towing capacity could be better, and it lacks Android Auto or Apple CarPlay connectivity.

For many years, the midsize truck market was led by the formidable Toyota Tacoma and Nissan Frontier. But lately there are some new players on the scene, including the 2019 Ford Ranger SuperCrew, which goes head to head against the 2019 Toyota Tacoma Double Cab. Both seat five and start in the mid 20s, but there they differ. The Ranger is offered with an impressive turbocharged 4-cylinder right out of the gate that makes significantly more power than the Tacoma’s I4. However, the Tacoma is offered with an optional 3.5-liter V6 that makes more power without a significant bite in fuel economy. Each is offered in different configurations that increase the luxury level, and both have a dedicated off-road package (the FX4 Off-Road package in the Ford’s case and the Tacoma’s TRD Pro). They’re both sharp-looking everyday work trucks that offer some nice amenities and features and customization possibilities.

Ford comes in strong here against the formidable Toyota Tacoma, making a very good case for itself with a robust and reasonably fuel-efficient turbocharged 4-cylinder, some options packages, good towing and payload capacity, and a great 10-speed automatic. The Ranger comes well equipped right out the gate, so it does lead in terms of value at the lower end of the spectrum, but its hard ride counts against it. The reigning champ Toyota Tacoma Double Cab does miss a few cues, lacking some connectivity features and even power seats, but it’s hard to go wrong with its rock-solid reliability, strong resale value, and huge variety of customization options. Ford’s put in a solid effort here, but our money is on the Tacoma.
