2019 Ford Ranger SuperCrew

Starting Price: $27,615 | Price Yours

Above Average: Great payload capacity and towing up to 7,500 pounds; impressive power and torque

Below Average: No diesel engine option; options quickly add up; ride quality is a bit stiff

Consensus: After an 8-year absence, the Ford Ranger returns as a midsize, with an impressive 4-cylinder turbo engine that makes great power and torque, including the ability to tow up to 7,500 pounds, an optional premium Bang & Olufsen stereo, and an impressive payload capacity. Beware, however, that adding options can cause the price to escalate quickly, and the ride is stiff. Make sure you take it for a test-drive.

2019 Nissan Frontier Crew Cab

Starting Price: $25,595 | Price Yours

Above Average: Affordable and durable; smooth ride; optional long bed

Below Average: Lacks modern safety technology; fuel mileage isn’t great

Consensus: The 2019 Nissan Frontier Crew Cab is a bare-bones, unpretentious work truck. It comes only with a V6 but is offered with a couple different bed lengths. The Nissan’s pricing is competitive, but the Frontier makes do without some of the safety and luxury technology that’s offered by some newcomers in the segment.

The 2019 Ford Ranger SuperCrew and 2019 Nissan Frontier Crew Cab both make compelling arguments in the competitive midsize pickup truck segment. Each comes in a couple different styles and trims, with both including a dedicated off-road model. Both are only offered with a single engine choice, (Ford turbocharged 4-cylinder, Nissan V6), although Nissan gives its buyers a choice of a manual or automatic transmission. Beyond that, the differences become more pronounced. The Nissan prides itself on its bare-bones work truck attitude and competitive price, whereby the newer SuperCrew comes with a number of luxury and tech features to keep it more competitive in the market, including the option of Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The Ranger’s ride is a bit harsher, though.

Both are offered with only one engine choice; both offer a dedicated off-road version

Ford Ranger SuperCrew Advantages

More power and better fuel economy; higher tow rating

Nissan Frontier Crew Cab Advantages

Lower starting price; optional long bed; choice of manual or automatic transmission

Final Recommendation

As much as we like the Frontier and respect its place in this segment over the years, it may be overdue for a refresh. The one engine offering in the Frontier Crew Cab is a 4.0-liter V6, but it’s outperformed by the Ford’s turbocharged 4-cylinder, which also makes better fuel economy. Add to that the Ranger’s optional tech and luxury features that buyers tend to expect and significantly better towing and payload capacities and it’s the clear winner here. One caveat: The Ranger’s ride can be a bit jarring, so it’s worth a test drive before you plunk down your hard-earned dollars.
