Beware, however, that adding options can cause the price to escalate quickly, and the ride is stiff. Make sure you take it for a test-drive.

Consensus: Sibling to the Chevy Colorado, the 2019 GMC Canyon Crew Cab distinguishes itself with plenty of comfort and style, as well as lots of safety and tech features and a modern interior. Options can cause the price to escalate quickly (for example, the turbodiesel engine adds $4,000 to the cost), and it’s not the best choice off road. Because its new resale value has yet to be determined it will likely trail the Toyota Tacoma.

Once thought lost to the Toyota Tacoma, the midsize pickup market is now more competitive, including relatively new entries the 2019 Ford Ranger SuperCrew and the 2019 GMC Canyon Crew Cab. Both trucks seat five passengers, bring a level of ruggedness and practicality to the table, and offer decent towing and payload capacity. They are both offered with four-wheel drive, although for true off-roading capability, you’ll have to step up to the Ranger’s FX4 Off-Road package, the equivalent of which is called All-Terrain on the GMC. The Ranger makes great power right out of the gate, but only comes with one engine. The Canyon’s entry-level 4-cylinder is a little weak, so we recommend stepping up to the 3.5-liter V6, or if you need max towing capacity, the 2.8-liter turbodiesel.


Neither is offered with a manual transmission; comparable starting prices; plenty of options and tech upgrades.

Final Recommendation

This is a tough match-up, as both of these trucks really bring their “A” game to a segment long thought lost to the Toyota Tacoma and Nissan Frontier. The 2019 Ford Ranger SuperCrew makes a strong case for itself with an excellent base engine and transmission and some nice tech features, but it doesn’t give buyers much choice, offered with only one bed length and one engine. It’s significantly more powerful than the base 2019 GMC Canyon Crew Cab, for which our choice would be the 3.5-liter V6 upgrade. If saving money is a priority, or conversely, upgrading to a proper off-road package, then the Ford Ranger is the pick of these two, but given its luxurious interior, choice of both engines and bed lengths, and its tech and safety offerings, we have to award this one to the GMC Canyon. Beware, though, that if resale is a factor, both of these trucks still trail the standard-bearer Toyota Tacoma.
