Consensus: Best-selling truck (and vehicle) in America for a reason

The most capable truck in the class, the best-selling vehicle in the country and a four-time Kelley Blue Book Best Buy.

Ford has established a strong reputation for using innovation to keep its trucks highly popular, capable and easy to use. One of the biggest moves was to build the F-150 out of aluminum. That legitimately bold move has proven to be a winning play, one that saved weight (up to 700 pounds in some cases) and increased efficiency. But Ford's forward thinking doesn't stand in the way when it's time to get to work. The Ford F-150 offers stellar towing and payload capacities, and top safety ratings.

For 2018, Ford's innovation continues. There are two new engines available, including a turbodiesel that's expected to arrive later in 2018, and most of the current engine lineup receives updates that improve power and efficiency. All but the base engine are backed by a new 10-speed automatic transmission, and auto stop/start is now standard. It's for all these reasons and more that we've picked the F-150 as KBB's Pickup Truck Best Buy four years in a row.

Driving It

We're impressed by the F-150's engine lineup, but as our full review indicates, there is a lot more to like about Ford's full-size pickup: "The F-150's SuperCrew cabin is roomy, offering excellent legroom and a comfortable ride. Suspension and brakes were designed so that whether the truck is loaded or unloaded, the ride doesn't suffer and brakes feel confident and strong."

Three Turbos to Choose From

The F-150 is available with a traditional V8 and traditional V6, but there are two twin-turbo V6 engines to choose from as well. The F-150's maximum tow rating of 13,200 pounds is achieved not with the big V8, but with the 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 under the hood. The EcoBoost puts out 375 horsepower and a best-in-class 470 lb-ft of torque. There's also the excellent 2.7-liter V6, redesigned for 2018 for greater efficiency and power. The 2.7-liter is plenty of engine for just about everyone -- and is rated to tow up to 8,500 pounds. The third turbo, a 3.0-liter Power Stroke turbodiesel engine, is scheduled to go on sale in spring 2018 and will use the 10-speed automatic.

Work Innovations

The F-150 is the only truck on the market that offers an integrated tailgate step, making it easier to get into and out of the bed. You can also get tough cargo ramps for loading motorcycles or work equipment. And you can lock, unlock or lower the tailgate with the key fob. With the available Pro Trailer Backup Assist, you can turn a knob left or right for the direction you want to back up the trailer, and the truck controls steering and limits speed.

Sales King

They say it's lonely at the top and the Ford F-150 knows a thing or two about that. Not only has the F-150 been at the top of the light-duty pickup truck segment for more than four decades, it's been the country's best-selling vehicle overall for more than 30 years in a row.

What About the Raptor?

The mega-off-roader Ford F-150 Raptor returns for the 2018 model year, as both a SuperCab and SuperCrew. The Baja-tested truck was completely redesigned last year, now lighter, more powerful and more capable than ever.

Little Brother

After what will have been a seven year hiatus, Ford will re-enter the midsize truck market with the 2019 Ford Ranger
