Consensus: BMW's compact SUV grows up and gets sportier

Putting a strong emphasis on the "sport" in "sport/utility vehicle."

New for 2018, the BMW X3 gives owners the pleasure of the driving dynamics of BMW's sports sedans, with the added functionality of a SUV. Now in its third generation, the X3 is available for the first time as a performance M model, comes standard with all-wheel drive, and has enhanced safety and comfort features. While the new X3 competes in a segment with appealing rivals like the Mercedes-Benz GLC and Audi Q5, its combination of sport sedan attitude and all-season performance keeps BMW's compact luxury SUV competitive.

Driving It

In our full review of the 2018 BMW X3, we noted that the M40i " an SUV that likes to pretend it's a sport sedan. The 355-horsepower turbocharged 6-cylinder engine ensures excellent acceleration, going from a standstill to 60 mph in about 4.6 seconds. The suspension lets the X3 M40i take corners like a pro, and the standard all-wheel drive boasts a rearward bias to take the most advantage of the 50:50 weight distribution."
