BMW’s Concept M8 Gran Coupe, an athletic and fast-looking luxury sports car, hints at the design for the upcoming 8 Series Gran Coupe and M8 Gran Coupe that the German automaker will launch in 2019. Set to become BMW’s flagship range, the 8 Series will also spawn an M8 high-performance variant.

Revealed at the Geneva Motor Show, the striking green-hued Concept M8 Gran Coupe has four doors and shares a rakish roofline similar to the previous 6 Series Gran Coupe, which it will effectively replace in the lineup. The 8 Series’ striking looks are the result of a long wheelbase, flowing roofline and short back end which give the car the look of a 2-door.

The face of the concept is muscular and broad and features large carbon fiber reinforced plastic air intakes. The car has the traditional BMW kidney shaped grille, though two elements are joined in the middle, all outlined in gold. The angled and yellow-tinged headlights, which sit slightly higher than the grille, emphasize the car’s closeness to the road.

Optimized aerodynamics

A sportier presence and wide track are easily seen in the rear. Flared wheel arches, diffuser, spoiler, slim taillights, twin dual exhausts and dramatic air intakes in the bumper showcase the car’s athleticism. The roof is made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic, which helps lower its center of gravity and aerodynamics were optimized by using specially designed outside rearview mirrors.

“The BMW Concept M8 Gran Coupe is designed to stir things up, to polarize – it should move you emotionally,” Domagoj Dukec, vice president of design for BMW M and BMW i, said in a statement. “With this car we want to reach people who are looking for something special and who want to stand out from the crowd. Here, BMW M is unmistakably taking luxury out of its comfort zone.”

BMW used a Salève Vert paint to show off the Concept M8 Gran Coupe and says the color appears to change from green to gray-blue in different lighting. The green shade was paired with a gold color to accentuate the window outlines, M gills, brakes, wheel rims and exhaust tips. BMW gave no details on the vehicle dimensions, the engine under the hood or performance specs. And while no pricing was given, expect a M8 Gran Coupe to cost north of $100,000.
