BMW has launched high performance versions of its flagship 8 Series Coupe and Convertible in the form of the 2020 BMW M8. The newest M model ties directly to BMW’s racing effort in IMSA WeatherTech Sports Car Championship where it competes with the M8 GTE, which has taken class victories in races including the 24 Hours of Daytona.

Powered by a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8, the standard 2020 BMW M8 Coupe and Convertible models are rated at 600 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque. Competition models have special tuning that bumps output 617 horsepower while retaining the same torque but over a wider rev band. Both the M8 and M8 Competition versions are equipped with 8-speed Steptronic sequential shift automatic transmissions that can be manually operated through a console-mounted shift lever or steering wheel paddles.

How much does the 2020 BMW M8 Coupe and Convertible cost?

The 2020 BMW M8 Coupe starts at $133,000, while the 2020 M8 Convertible is priced from $142,500. The Competition version of the M8 Coupe is $146,000 and the Competition M8 Convertible costs $155,500. All prices exclude $995 delivery.

Standard all-wheel drive

All M8 Coupe and Convertible models are equipped with BMW’s xDrive rear-biased all-wheel drive system. In addition to a center transfer case that employs a multi-plate clutch to send power to the rear and front axles, the M8 also uses an electronically controlled active rear differential to split the power between the two rear wheels as needed.

The M8 rides on an independent double-wishbone front and 5-link rear suspension that incorporates BMW’s Adaptive M Suspension that uses real-time input from body movement, road surface and steering to individually adjust each of the shocks. There are also Comfort, Sport and Sport Plus modes that have separate calibrations for steering, suspension, stability control and throttle response.

Other custom settings include Efficient, Sport and Sport Plus modes for the engine, Comfort and Sport for steering, Comfort and Sport for braking as well as being able to configure the xDrive system for all-wheel drive, all-wheel drive Sport or rear-drive.

Specific design cues

The 2020 BMW M8 Coupe and Convertible are distinguished by larger openings in the front inlets to provide the additional cooling required by the engine, transmission and brakes. The kidney grille and side gills are finished in black chrome, while the mirror caps, rear spoiler and diffuser are rendered in high gloss black. A carbon fiber roof on the Coupe version helps to reduce weight. Convertibles are fitted with a multi-layer soft top which can retract in 15 seconds at speeds of up to 30 mph.

The 2020 BMW M8 Coupe and Convertible go into production this July.
