BMW 6 Series Coupe Axed in America
BMW has ceased building the 6 Series Coupe model for the U.S. market, including the potent M6 Coupe. The last 2-door headed for America rolled off the production line in February, although word of its demise didn’t surface until this week. Sales of the 6 Series Gran Coupe and Convertible are unaffected by the move.
A statement from the U.S. BMW rep noted that: “As is the case with other vehicles in our line-up, model lifecycle is unique to each vehicle.” However, BMW has seen the 6 Series sales soften here to less than 250 units in April and the Gran Coupe and Convertible continue to account for the vast majority of all 6 Series volume. Interestingly enough, the Coupe will continue to be offered in other markets.
The departure of the 6 Series Coupe opens the door even wider to speculation regarding the introduction of a new and even higher-end replacement previously hinted at by BMW execs. Disguised prototypes of what’s expected to be introduced as the new-gen 8 Series Coupe have been spotted testing in Europe, although production on this new range-topper isn’t likely to commence until sometime late next year.
