Following on its trick Up! GTI Concept unveiled last week, Volkswagen has taken the wraps off of two more show cars at the annual GTI fan fest at Lake Wörthersee in Austria. Carrying on a decade-long Wörthersee tradition, each was created by a team of young, talented VW apprentices and offer an interesting look at what may lie ahead.

GTI First Decade Concept

Finished in Atlantic Blue Metallic and Satin Ocean Simmer with the number 10 on its C-pillars and a First Decade logo on its hatch, the GTI First Decade is the most radical of the pair. Its distinctive paintwork is matched with competition-inspired body enhancements and 20-inch alloy wheels while the 2-seat cabin has sport buckets trimmed in black Nappa leather and Alcantara set off with blue accent elements and features an 11-speaker/1,690-watt sound system.

Motivating the GTI First Decade Concept is a 396-horsepower gasoline engine up front paired with a 16-horse electric motor that drives the rear wheels. Each system can function independently or in concert, with the driver able to control the mix using a tablet or the infotainment system.

Golf GTE Variant ImpulsE Concept

Providing what may be a slightly more realistic take on tomorrow, the Golf GTE ImpulsE Concept steps up the zero-emissions side of the European Golf GTE plug-in hybrid wagon by swapping the current 8.8-kWh lithium-ion battery pack for a larger 16.8-kWh alternative. The bigger battery doubles the effective EV range of the car to an estimated 40 real-world miles when being driving by its 101-horspower electric motor alone. Here, too, the motor in this one-off GTE can still operate alone or in conjunction with the standard 148-horsepower/1.4-liter turbocharged TSI 4-cylinder gasoline engine and increase range to roughly 500 miles using the U.S. EPA testing regimen.

To properly set off its unique design, the Golf GTE ImpulsE Concept sports a 5-tone paint job that matches Oryx White, Apassionata Blue, Anthracite, Hallmark and St. James Red plus techy-looking graphics and twin hood scoops. With custom bucket seats trimmed in leather and Alcantara set off with special trim accents, the cabin also features a panoramic glass roof, and animated app-controlled ambient lighting.
