Diesel. For many the word conjures up images of industrial-grade trucks with loud engines that billow acrid black exhaust. Diesels have a mixed reputation in America, so it may be surprising to some that modern diesel engines are actually part of the solution when it comes to limiting the environmental impact of vehicles. The big advantage of a diesel engine is 20- to 30-percent greater fuel efficiency than a comparable gasoline engine. Thanks to the mandated use of ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel and newer clean-diesel technologies, modern diesel engines offer excellent efficiency without the harmful emissions associated with older diesels. In this video, Kelley Blue Book's Micah Muzio explores the advantages of diesel by driving five-hundred miles in a Mercedes-Benz GL320 BlueTEC in under six minutes -- through the magic of time-lapse photography.
