Toyota GR HV Sports Concept set for Tokyo
Toyota will show a concept sports car with a hybrid powertrain as part of the 45th Tokyo Motor Show. The GR HV Sports Concept spec’d out in racing trim is said to be a preview of what an all-new Supra might look like.
Toyota describes the rear-wheel drive concept as “a new way to enjoy cars by integrating the thrill of a sports car with the environmental friendliness of an eco-car.”
The car’s design resembles the automaker’s Gazoo Racing’s TS050 Hybrid car that competes in the World Endurance Championship. The hood features two vents and aggressive front styling. The GR HV sports LED headlights, aluminum wheels and includes a rear diffuser that looks similar to the TS050 Hybrid.
The GR HV Sports Concept is powered by the THS-R (Toyota Hybrid System-Racing), working in concert with refined hybrid tech in the TSO50 Hybrid. That car features a 2.4-liter, turbocharged V-6 gas engine combined with an 8MJ hybrid system. The matte black two-seat GR HV features a targa top, similar to the roof panels used on the Japanese automaker’s popular convertible sports cars of the past including the Toyota Sports 800 and the Supra.
“Drivers can delight in the performance of THS-R in a genuine sports car while experiencing a sense of freedom thanks to the targa top,” Toyota says.
The GR HV is shorter, but wider than the Supra. It’s also slightly longer and wider than the Celica. The concept is about 173 inches in length, 71 inches wide and its height is about 50 inches. The Supra was about 182 inches long and 65 inches wide, while the Celica was about 170.5 inches long and 68 inches wide.
Much of the focus of the GR HV is its powertrain. The coupe’s hybrid battery is positioned near its center, which helps boost performance of the sports car, Toyota says. The GR HV has a push button ignition switch resting on the car’s shifter knob. Drivers can use a switch in the center cluster to set the transmission to automatic, or opt for a manual mode and use the H-patterned shifter to move through six speeds.
