The Mustang's status as an American icon is rooted in its bang-for-the-buck value. Attach the Shelby name, however, and all bets are off. Ford
has announced the 2008 Shelby GT500KR will sport a starting sticker price of $79,995. The GT500KR is the 540-horsepower, "King of the Road" version of the Shelby GT500 that lays claim to a measly 500 horsepower -- but starts at just $44,425. So, what does the extra $35,000 buy? In addition to 40 more horsepower, the GT500KR also has 30 more pound-feet of torque (510), a stiffer suspension, lower ride height, new front splitter, revised rear spoiler, short-throw shifter and a unique carbon fiber hood. The 5.4-liter supercharged V8 -- matched exclusively with a six-speed manual transmission -- is the same found in the GT500 but with revised tuning and a cold-air intake. Ford says the KR will scoot to 60 miles per hour in 4.3 seconds on its way to a 12.1-second quarter mile. Production will be limited to 1000 units for the 2008 model year, the first of which will arrive at select Ford dealers beginning in late May.
