Revealed: Nissan Resonance Concept - Detroit 2013
Rolling boldly into uncharted territory for the crossover SUV realm, the Nissan Resonance Concept reportedly offers an early look at a design direction the automaker is serious about exploring. In describing the dramatically rendered 5-door/5-passenger Hybrid Electric Vehicle, Francois Bancon, Nissan Motor Co. division general manager, Product Strategy and Planning noted that the Resonance "is not meant to appeal to traditional two-box SUV shoppers, but rather to those whose fashion and design choices make a statement. For Nissan, this concept makes our statement about the future of this segment."
Penned at Nissan Design America in San Diego, California, under the direction of Shiro Nakamura, senior vice president and chief creative officer of Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. the Resonance Concept pushes the boundaries of convention on just about every level imaginable. The dramatically contoured bodywork reflects what Nissan has dubbed "dynamic fluidity." That theme extends from its "V-Motion" front end to its distinctive A- and D-pillar treatments before terminating into edgy aft quarters that tidily resolve the Resonance's near-fastback "floating" roof. Finished in Flare Orange accented with Satin Chrome accents, the Resonance Concept further emphasizes its aggressively elegant character with 22-inch dynamic-flow aluminum wheels wrapped in 265/40 tires.
Inside, the Resonance Concept reflects a similar anti-establishment approach in an effort to create a VIP-like lounge atmosphere that Bancon also notes is aimed at people "who value an amazing experience over traditional indulgence." Open the door, and beyond the Resonance's sequential welcome lights you enter a realm where rich wood and supple leather comingle with a multi-dimensional dash that's designed to offer the driver quasi-holographic visuals that present various bits of information by their level of importance. Included in the car's lengthy list of high-tech touches is an advanced cloud-based telematics system.
In keeping with the ever-greener themes of tomorrow, the Nissan Resonance Concept is fitted with a hybrid electric drivetrain that teams a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine with Nissan's one-motor/two-clutch EV adjunct fed by a compact lithium-ion battery pack. Power travels through a to all a next-generation Xtronic CVT continuously variable automatic transmission and on to all four wheels via an advanced Intelligent AWD system.
"Resonance is meant to be provocative, energetic and engaging - even polarizing," admitted Bancon -- terms that also have been applied to several other Nissan offerings, most notably the Juke. That said, he remains convinced that "Its edgy yet sophisticated design, combined with an environmentally sensitive powertrain and intelligent utility provides a clear, exciting view into the future of crossover innovation."
